Westbrook is a town in Cumberland County, Maine, United States. The population was 1,847 at the 2010 census. Westbrook is part of the Portland–Vancouver–Hoboken, NJ–PA metropolitan area. The first settlement in Westbrook was made by families from Penobscot Bay on the east coast of North America in 1795. In 1802, a group of settlers from British Columbia founded the town of Fort George on land that had been given to them by Governor John Graves Simcoe. The name "Westbrook" was chosen for its location at the mouth of Westbrook Brook which flowed into Penobscot Bay. In 1836, Aiken and Hammond bought land south of present-day Westbrook and developed it into the towns of Aiken and Hammond. The town center developed around three churches: First Baptist (1836), Methodist (1862), and Sacred Heart Catholic (1892). A new jail was built in 1862 and operated until 1916. The first post office opened in 1835; it remained operational until 1865 when it was moved to Bangor. In 1886, people from Mount Desert Island began claiming land just north of present-day Westbrook for themselves; this led to what is known as the Hammond Land Claim Dispute which lasted for over 25 years ultimately leading to renaming of Mount Desert Island as Southport during that time period. A new school became open in Westbrook in 1912 after being built on donated property by Mrs Lillie Hahnenburg who also raised money to pay for it with her own resources while living in Portsmouth Square across from First Presbyterian Church where she worshipped until her death on October 3rd 1915 aged 91 years old thereby making Westbrook one century older than Portsmouth Square! On July 9th 1917 a tornado touched down near present day Westbrook destroying many homes including those located along Main Street which remain standing today testament to how quickly communities can adapt if something like this happens! This event helped contribute to increasing tourism within town even more which has continued up through today!

By 1870, about 60% of all residents were farmers with another 30% being fishermen or livestock dealers. About this time also, Westbrook began to experience some problems with its water supply which led to its development into an municipally owned water system. In 1924, Westbrook incorporated as a town under the name of Bangor City limits due to concerns over population growth within Bangor County without proper city planning underway. The incorporation served primarily as a way for townspeople to get more representation on various local committees however there have never been any changes regarding township status since then...
