Bowie was first settled in 1751 by families of English immigrants. The name was derived from the town of Bowyer in Lancashire, England. Bowie's early history is intertwined with that of Maryland. In 1775, Bowie and other towns in Prince George's County sided with the Revolution against British rule. In 18th century Bowie was a small agricultural community near present-day Middletown. In 1802, Bowie became the seat of Prince George's County when it was created from part of Montgomery County. In 1834, Baltimore and Prince George's Counties merged to form what is now Maryland. When Baltimore City seceded from Maryland in 1861, Bowie remained within its boundaries until 1870 when it united with Harford County to form Baltimore City again. The first settlers to arrive in what is now Bowie were primarily English colonists who established homes along the Potomac River and Its tributaries for trade and agriculture purposes. By 1800, some 300 people lived in Bowie; many were farmers who grew corn, potatoes, wheat and other crops on their properties upstream from the river or along its tributaries downstream. By 1830 there were over 1,000 residents living in three villages located near modern day Bethesda: Bowman Village (now known as Gaylordtown), Millstream Valley (now known as Springdale) and Upper Ferry Road Manor (now known as Barkerstown). Many notable persons have been associated with Bowie throughout its history including Judge John Marshall Harlan II (1811-1884), author Washington Irving (1785-1830), General James Longstreet (1807-1865), Vice President Andrew Johnson (1808-1868) and Ulysses S Grant (1785-1865). As a result of its strong traditions as an agricultural center flanked by important rural communities interests also played a significant role within the community which continues into today’s periodicity through various events such as antique car shows/fairs/theater performances etc., all while keeping ties to downtown Bethesda which remains one of America’s most vibrant neighborhoods today
