Cumberland, Maryland is a small town located in Prince George's County, Maryland. The population was 3,811 at the 2010 census. Cumberland is one of the oldest towns in Prince George's County and has been founded by English settlers in 1768. The town was originally called "Newburgh" after Newburgh on the Potomac River. In 1810, Cumberland was renamed to honor General John Forbes Cumberland who fought in the Mexican-American War. The name "Cumberland" is still used today to refer to the town and its surrounding area including Oak Bluff and Upper Arlington. In addition to its role as a small town, Cumberland is also known for its agricultural produce such as apples and corn. They also have a small dairy industry which produces cheese and cream puffs. Cumberland was first settled in 1651 by Scots-Irish settlers. The town grew rapidly during the 18th century, becoming an important center for commerce and culture. Cumberland became a state in 1785, and was named after Lord Cumberland, who had helped to defend British interests in North America. The town saw much growth during the 19th century as a result of its growing population and economy. In 1907, Cumberland was renamed Prince George's County after Prince George Augustus of Germany, the founder of modern Germany. The 20th century saw large growth in the town, with new construction and development taking place throughout the decade. However, some struggles occurred throughout this time period; for example, in 1916 a fire destroyed most of downtown Cumberland. Despite these challenges, however, Cumberland has continued to grow since then and is now one of Maryland's most significant cities.

Cumberland was first settled in 1681 by English colonists. The town was moved to its current location in 1757 after being purchased from the Chalk Hill Indian tribe. Cumberland became a county in 1868 and is now part of Prince George's County, Maryland.
