Elkton, Maryland is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, and it was once the home of the Elkton Arsenal. The arsenal was built in 1837 by General John J. Pershing and it became one of the largest ammunition factories in America. It produced ammunition for guns, artillery, and other items. The arsenal closed its doors in 1949. Today, the building remains vacant and has been used as a storage facility for years. The history of ammunition is intertwined with that of firearms. Ammunition has been used for thousands of years to kill creatures large and small across cultures and continents. In Elkton, there are examples of both steel-jawed animals such as lions and bears as well as soft targets like rabbits or pigeons. In 1837, General John J. Pershing became interested in purchasing an arsenal to produce munitions for his army. He found that Elkton Arsenal had been built by Captain Henry Steele in 1794 as part of Fort Caroline on Yorktown Peninsula near modern-day Arlington Heights, Illinois (now Chicago). The fort served as headquarters for First Brigade under General James Knyphausen during the American Revolution before being abandoned in 1796 when Prince George's County was formed from parts of Fairfax County and Anne Arundel County). As soon as he learned about the existence of the fortifications at Elkton Arsenal he ordered their demolition but only afterCEO Robert Eichelberger threatened to sue him if he did so because "he could not let [the] place fall into disrepair". However despite orders from President James Knyphausen to demolish all remaining artillery batteries at Fort Caroline Elkhart also managed to keep many cannons standing until 1826 which made her one of few American arsenals still operational into World War II despite having lost most her equipment during Red Flag conditions in 1945 while she was still under British control (). However even though Fort Caroline remained active until 1826 there were numerous conversions taking place at Elkton Arsenal throughout its lifetime including: Captain Henry Steele’s Conversion Facility – This facility converts old cannon into new types including ironclad shotguns capable of hitting a target over 3 miles away with direct fire (), breech loading rifles which allowed soldiers to reload quickly without getting wet (), mortar guns which could fire larger rounds than those firing through muzzle loaders () Additionally they converted three field pieces originally designed for ships into howitzers () These cannons were later replaced by Mark V anti-aircraft artillery pieces (). Lieutenant Colonel Richard Biddle’s Gunnery School – This school trained officers who would carry out armament repairs on captured French cannons () buildings closed soon afterwards due to lack funding however remain open today as former Biddle Armory building . All these conversions took place between 1800-1826 making Elkton one of America’s earliest powder factories . At some point during this time Captain Henry Steele left mercantile employment but continued making weapons designs himself becoming known as “The Father Of American Cannonry” (); His conversion facility can be seen today across Elmwood Park next door where original Captain Henry Steele gunsmithing shop once stood (). After Commodore Matthew Cushing took command at Norfolk Navy Yard he ordered all vessels using cotton batting instead giving rise to what is now known as shotgun ammo)) During this time period different companies began manufacturing rifled ordnance such As: ,Enfield Rifle Company Ltd., Sharpshooters Company & Sons (later Remington Arms Co.), Mossberg & Richter Manufacturing Company), Martini & Richardson Manufacturing Company) Thereafter rifle ammo production increased rapidly thanks largely to US participation in World War I with millions imported directly from Europe .) By 1920 nearly every rifle company within United States had developed a caliber specific bullet design utilizing rifling technology ) By 1930 almost 60% all rifle bullets were made with rifled barrels .) Most recently Winchester Repeating Arms produces SEMIArmor piercing rounds.)

Elkton is a small town in Prince George's County, Maryland. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. Elkton is located on the Potomac River about 12 miles east of Washington D.C. and 20 miles west of Baltimore. The first Europeans to visit Elkton were French in 1607 when they set up a trading post near present-day Elkton Mills and named it "L'Écureuil" (the elk). A British survey in 1755 gave the name "Elkton" to what is now nearby Union Station; this name may be derived from an early settler's claim that he had seen a big animal standing behind a tree within earshot of his cabin. In 1759, Captain John Smith built Fort Necessity here while exploring the area for new land grants as part of his Virginia expedition under colonial governor James Eager. A year later, he returned with news that there were large numbers of elks grazing on land grant 8 leagues wide and extending down to Loudoun County across the river at Alexandria. In December 1760, Smith sent two parties overland to explore this potential new land and report back to him; one party discovered water but no game A second group led by Major John Forbes entered into negotiations with local chief Powhatan for purchase of some of these lands from him; ultimately these negotiations failed and Forbes returned home without purchasing any land . In 1762/3, Indian allies of Claude de Lisle attacked Fort Necessity; all three men who garrisoned it - Captain John Smith (major), First Lieutenant Edward Braddock ( majors) and Second Lieutenant David Thompson - died in the attack In 1802/3, entrepreneur Nicholas Towle organized a wheat crop trial in western Prince George's County which led to development around Elkton Mills . This milling process yielded various types of flour including white bread which became very popular in eastern Maryland during this time period . Elkton was incorporated as a town on February 14, 1825 . The first store opened its doors here on Main Street on October 3rd . On April 9th 1826 Elmira & Erie Canal was completed between Lackawanna & Ellicott City creating much needed trade along this route The town saw many businesses close during Prohibition because liquor could not be transported across country without getting confiscated or facing legal challenges Elkhart Coal Mining Company closed its mine north of town due to low coal prices in 1942 causing great loss for residents Over $2 million was invested into redevelopment efforts here after prohibition ended but never fulfilled due largely to lack of available financial resources

It was named for Elijah Elkton who had been killed by English Indians in 1758. The first settler in what is now Elkton was Captain John Smith who arrived there in 1814. He built a cabin on the east bank of the Potomac River and named it "Elkton". A post office called Elkton was established in 1817, and until 1840 it functioned as the only post office in Howard County. The first Methodist church was organized here in 1825. In 1830 President James Ketchum designated Elkton as the county seat of Howard County; however, this designation did not take hold because no county meetings were held here until after General Robert Ewell's Defeat at Monocacy Creek that year. Elkhart House (later known as Mayflower House) which served as county courthouse from 1850 to 1800 is still standing today and is a historic landmark within minutes' drive of both Elkton and Washington D.C.. In 1861 when America became involved in the American Civil War, many farms around present-day Elmira started to produce crops for soldiership but little else happened until after 1865 when development began near present day Hagerstown due to railroad construction then moving towards our current location

The population of Elkton increased rapidly after the opening of the Potomac River Railroad to the town in 1869. After World War II, the economy changed and there were few jobs available for people in town. In the early 1960s, local residents organized to raise money to save their town from closure. They succeeded and Elkton remained a small community until it became an incorporated municipality in 2002.
