Elkton is a town located in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 9,890 at the 2010 census. Elkton is part of the Washington–Baltimore metropolitan area. The first settlers in what is now Elkton were Protestant refugees from nearby Whitby, Ontario. They named their new community "Bellefontaine" after a place in Normandy where many of these refugees had been living before they moved to Canada. The original land grant for Bellefontaine was near present-day Mount Vernon and Greenbelt Avenue. As one resident put it: "We started out on this piece of country just like any other family - plowing and planting and raising crops." The residents of Bellefontaine soon began to build up a strong society which included churches, schools, taverns, and mills. A post office was established in 1814 and soon became an important center for trade in the region due to its location on the Susquehanna River. By 1835, when Congress created a new county within Prince George's County known as Calvert County (later Montgomery), Bellefontaine had become an isolated outpost with no hope of revival until Dutch Reformed missionary John Hoadly arrived from Holland in 1836 and began preaching the gospel there. In 1840, when Minnesota joined the Union as the 10th state, Elkton became part of Calvert County as well – making it one of only two towns remaining within that county after Maryland seceded from the Union on February 14, 1861. Hoadly remains an honored figure here today; he has been inducted into both StroudsburgUniversity’s Hall Of Fame and into Maryland’s Congressional Gold Medal Museum! Despite being surrounded by farmland all along its eastern edge byBaltimore City limits (the east side including Elkton proper borders Baltimore County to the south), Elkton managed to maintain its independent character until well into the 20th century – even going so far as to prohibit annexation by either Baltimore or Towson City! For much of this time it functioned primarily as a commuter town for those living east of Frederick Douglass Boulevard (now known as I-95). Elkton is located in Cecil County, Maryland, on the border of Harford and Anne Arundel Counties. It was founded in 1758 by George Washington as a post office under the name Elkton. The population of Elkton reached 1,500 in 1871. In 1896, the Post Office Department moved its headquarters to Elkton from nearby Laurel. The town changed its name to Elkton after General John Custer's death in 1876. The first settler at what is now Elkton was George Washington who arrived there in 1758 with his army during the American Revolution. After three years of travel he arrived at what is now Elkton and named it after himself, saying "I will erect here a small fortification for my defence." His followers built a small house and called it Fort Washington which soon became known as Camp Washington. In 1800, Samuel Higginson purchased land adjacent to present-day Elmira Street and built a cabin which he named Higginson's Mill; this mill still stands today within walking distance of the city limits of Elkton. In 1811, Thomas Settle bought land just north of present day Elmira Street from Samuel Higginson and built an addition to his cabin also known as Settle's Cabin which still stands today within walking distance of the city limits of Elkton. This addition became known as Settle's Store (now part of Walmart). In 1821 Isaac Van Buren granted Daniel Boone 150 acres (6 km2) south of present-day Elmira Street along Beaver Creek for his hunting grounds when he explored western Maryland for President James K Polk during the height of America's frontier expansionism campaign. Samuel Higginson sold his holdings east of current-day Elmira Street around 1830 to Cornelius Vanderbilt for $3 million dollars making him one of America's first millionaire landowners. He donated this land to Cecil County for development into what is today Elkton Township including partslying Sunnyside and Westville villages that would later become partsof Laurel City ().
Elkton was founded in 1787 by George Washington and his brother James. The town's first post office was established in 1788. Elkton became a census-designated place (CDP) in 1950, and a city in 1959. In 2007, the city of Elkton merged with the neighboring town of Bethesda to form the newly created Bethesda–Elkton Metropolitan Statistical Area.
