In 1865, Captain George Cram bought a munitions plant near Winchester, Virginia and started making shot shells also using local materials such as coal and wood for insulation purposes. This led to new businesses being established throughout the area producing different types of round projectiles such as buckshot, birdshot, slugs, grenades etcetera
