Havre De Grace is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 7,811 at the 2010 census. Havre De Grace is one of the oldest settlements on the Eastern Shore of Maryland and has been inhabited by humans since 7500 BC. The town was first called "Acre" after an oak tree that grew near the edge of town. The name changed to "Havre" in honor of Admiral John A. Havre who served as Commodore in the Chesapeake Bay Campaign of 1813. The first European settlers in Havre de Grace were Frenchmen from Canada who arrived in 1622 and named it "Acre". They settled around what is now Main Street and High Street and left behind evidence of their presence including a stone monument still standing today which reads "Havre de Grace English Settlement 1622". In 1727, the General Assembly passed a bill allowing for Christian worship services on Sundays outside of Baltimore with Reverend Samuel Morse officiating. This event marks the beginning of Havre de Grace's long relationship with Christianity. The first school was built in 1814 by Nicholas Penniman and was located on Meetinghouse Hill. In 1865, when Havre de Grace became part of Prince George's County, its only public school closed due to lack of finances. In 1892, a new school building was constructed adjacent to Queen Anne's School which remained operational until 1976 when it caught fire and burned down; this event also marked the end of education for most residents within town limits. In 1924, two brothers named Joe and Jimmy Setterfield established a grocery store in downtown Havre de Grace which soon became known as one of North America's most popular grocery storesdue to its wide variety items along with Prompt service- both inside and outside doorsteps during busy periods). It operated until 1978 when it went outof business again due to changing demographics within town limits which had began increasing their rates for groceries while reducing customer service hours (Joe Setterfield retired from his store ownership shortly before its closing). The last retail establishment within town limits closed its doors on July 15th 1998 when Bobs Discount Grocery Store vacated their space at 515 S Main Street after 43 years operation (Bobs Discount Grocery Store is now open at 1401 E Pratt Road). Outnumbering even nearby Bowie where African Americans make up just 25%Of all residents according thereto! Additionallyduring that same time period surveys have also shown that more than half Of all households living within 1 mile radius contain either 3 or 4 members! Which leaves numerous opportunities for economic development especially given recent increases seen throughout neighboring jurisdictions such as Bowie City Limits where African American representation reaches 50%, Monrovia City Limits where almost 60%, Harford County’s Worcester District where nearly 70%. Aspects like this continuewithstanding those aforementioned challenges faced by communities strivingto break free from historical disadvantages handed down through generations!
