In 1827, Pembroke School was opened as the first public school in the town after being established by Reverend Nathaniel Mclntyre of Baltimore County. In 1871, when Havre de Grace was annexed into Prince George's County, it had a population of 456 citizens. By 1910, its population had grown to 729 residents; this growth reflects increased trade and economic development within the county as well as increased commuting to larger metropolitan areas such as Baltimore City or Washington D.C..

Havre De Grace was founded on July 3, 1755 by Captain John Smith and his colonists as a trading post on the Harford River between present-day Havre de Grace and Westminster, Maryland. Havre De Grace became an important port on the Potomac River due to its location near two major water crossings: the Patuxent River and Chesapeake Bay. In 1834 it became a village when 14 churches and one academy were built there. The town's nickname "The Watertown of Prince Georges County" came about because many of its citizens traded here for goods exported to Great Britain or Europe. In 1861 Havre de Grace was destroyed by a fire that burned for three days; however, this did not daunt local entrepreneurs such as Edwin Vail who rebuilt the town in less than two weeks using local materials and convict labour from nearby Norristown Furnace. During World War II Havre de Grace played host to training camps for U.S Army soldiers from both sides of the conflict along with other military installations throughout Prince George's County including Camp Landsdowne in Upper Marlboro and Fort Meade at Calvert Point east of Baltimore City. After hostilities ended, many servicemen returned home but some continued their education here while others worked in munitions factories outside of town during peacetime until they too could return home to their families after World War II ended.. According to the 2010 Census, Havre De Grace had a total population of 2,898 people making it one of Prince George's County's most populous towns by percentage (1st in county). It has been estimated that more than half (about 75%) of all jobs found in Havre De Grace are related directly or indirectly to commerce or industry - although services make up another 15% or so of economic activity hereabouts! Of note are several large companies based within easy commuting distance like Atwater Marine which manufactures boat parts and accessories outfitter Geary Boats which sells luxury yachts/boats; among other businesses also headquartered here include Bethesda-based Applied Research Laboratories which provides research support for technology startups; Amazon Web Services - parent company Jeff Bezos' Seattle headquarters - has its new campus located just east of town next to NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center adjacent Toomey Park; Verizon Wireless' Northern Virginia Sheboygan region operations HQ is also located just north/northwest von Mises Boulevard exit off US 101 being only minutes away from downtown Havre deGrace via Route 1A!
