In 1814, Captain John Smith discovered coal seam farming potential at Havre de Grace when he surveyed the area for President James K. Polk during his State of the Union Address. At that time, coal mining had not been developed extensively in Prince George's County so Smith offered to form an ownership interest with local businessmen including Samuel Morse and Alfred Vail to begin developing this new venture together which became known as Eastern Coal Mines Limited (ECM). The company began producingcoal from its mines at Havre de Grace on December 1st 1815 and soon began exporting coal to markets all over America. In 1916, ECM merged with Pennsylvania Coal Company to create Penn Central Railroad (PCR) which laid down track through Havre de Grace connecting Baltimore with Erie and New York City.. This event helped spur development of nearby Johns Hopkins University Hospital & School of Medicine which opened its doors in 1929 after years of planning by Drs Samuel Hahnemann and Lewis Hillman who were then students at PCR’s nearby research center at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine In 1951-1952 local resident Edwin Ladd constructed one of the first large concrete block housing developments in Maryland when he erected apartment complexes called “Ladd Place” east of downtown Havre De Grace along Second Avenue North Havre De Grace reached heights not seen since before World War II when Congressman Floyd Abrams created both the Congressional Research Service (CRS) within CRS Headquarters located just east off Harford Road NW across from Inner Harbor Naval Station - later renamed Congress Hall - as well as Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library/ Museum immediately adjacent thereto; all inside then newly built former UMWA Local 2299 Administration Building next door - all providing world-class research capabilities unavailable anywhere else until recently due primarily to budget cuts precipitated by sequestration following Obama administration policies On July 29th 2009 Mayor Rudolph Waddell announced plans for major redevelopment dubbed "New Town 2025" intends to include: 264 luxury apartments/condos; 100 acres commercial park; 14 miles long waterfront promenade complete with restaurants, shops, theaters and more; 200 job positions available for residents skilled trades or professional services related businesses such as IT work or carpentry etc.; public transportation options including MARGINS bus Rapid Transit service running directly between downtown/new town areaside stoplights operated by MARGINS regional transit authority

The town also contains residences from different periods including houses built by members of Congress, sailors from USS Baltimore who served in World War II, and more recent homes developed throughout downtown Havre de Grace over time. Today, Havre de Grace is home to many cultural events such as poetry readings at local restaurants or music festivals throughout the year as well as antique car shows and other events related to history or culture in general
