The name "Laurel" comes from the French word "Laurier" meaning Laurel tree. The first white settlers were brought over by wagon train from Philadelphia in 1814 and found a small farming community with only one house. For many years, it was thought that "Laurel" was named for an early settler or for some other natural landmark in the area such as a Laurel Hill or Laurel Branch Valley. However, research has since revealed that there is no evidence of any early settlers having called themselves 'Laurel'. In fact, there are several indications that this name may have been given to the community simply because it was close to where General Forbes lived while stationed at Fort Washington during his Commanding Officer career in 1814-1815. As time passed and more people came to live here, they began calling themselves 'Laurelites' or 'The People of Laurel'. In 1868, when Major General James Longstreet captured Fort McHenry during the Second Battle of Baltimore Heights, he ordered all inhabitants of Baltimore City east of Mount Vernon to leave their homes without warning. This order forced most of these families into areas near present day Bowie and Elmont Streets in downtownBaltimore City where they were evicted and forced into makeshift housing known as 'Garrison Hill'. Many of these families returned home after General Longstreet's surrender but about 10% remained behind to rebuild their homes deep within Garrison Hill until 1872 when they were finally able to return home again under military orders from President Ulysses S. Grant which turned them over back to their original owners '. Since its inception as a small farming community with just one house in 1814, Laurel has experienced significant growth both through migration (from Philadelphia) and through annexation by neighboring jurisdictions (such as Upper Marlboro). Today, it remains one of America's fastest growing communities with an estimated population growth rate above 5%.
