Takoma Park is an unincorporated community in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. It is located on the eastern edge of the Takoma National Forest. The community was founded by General James McLean in 1838 as a station on the Baltimore and Washington Railroad. The first post office in Takoma Park was established in 1839. The name "Takoma Park" was chosen because it represented the highest point reached by wagon trains traveling between Baltimore and Washington at that time. In 1865, when Takoma National Forest was created, part of it included present-day Takoma Park. In 1903, part of the park became home to Takoma High School which served students from Prince George's and Montgomery counties until 1965 when direct school funding from central government ended. In later years, many elementary schools were built in or near Takoma Park while other properties were leased for agricultural use or used for housing developments such as Northwest Side Development. In recent years, much development has taken place around Takoma Park including plans to add a golf course and several thousand square feet of retail space to an existing shopping mall west of town center; a new high school village planned for east side of town center that would include a library, arena and parking garage; and construction of a wastewater treatment plant adjacent to town center that will bring new life to an area long known as one of the most polluted cities in America

The Takoma Park area was first settled in 1774 by the Catoctin Band of Indians. In 1814, the Potomac River was crossed by a wagon road and named after General James K. Polk. The land that now includes Takoma Park was part of Prince George's County until 1821 when it became part of Montgomery County. The town of Takoma began to form in the early 1830s as a result of the influx of white settlers into what is now Takoma Park from other parts of Maryland and Virginia. The first courthouse in Takoma Park was built in 1835, and it served as the seat for both Montgomery County and Prince George's County until 1857. In that year, Prince George's County merged with Montgomery County to form the District of Columbia. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Takoma Park came under Confederate control and boycotted all food supplies due to their disagreement over slavery. In 1865, Union forces captured Takoma Park after a three-year battle which ended with about 800 casualties on both sides. As part of Reconstruction following the war, many African Americans were brought over from Africa to work in various sectors within Maryland and Washington D.C., including jobs at mills, mines, and plantations; however, they were not allowed to own property or vote because they were considered "property owners" rather than "citizens." Beginning in 1871, black residents began voting in local elections; however, this right did not come fully into effect until after passage of the Nineteenth Amendment (1924) granted citizens equality before the law regardless of race.
