Westminster is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. It is the seat of Prince George's County government and home to the Westminster School District. In 1881, much of present-day Westminster were annexed by nearby Johns Hopkins University without any vote from residents or property owners. As a result, much older parts of Westminster are not included in this article; those areas are located in neighboring jurisdictions such as Bowie and Elkridge counties. In 1888, most or all of present-day Western Shore Township (except for a tiny strip along Iron Road) became part of newly formed Midtown Baltimore; Middle Township remained an independent township until 1975 when it too became part of Bowie County. In 1951, King George VI granted land within what is now Midtown Baltimore to create YMCA Park which still occupies that portion today - one corner remains apartment buildings while another section forms a large open space with several tennis courts and other recreational facilities inside and out (the original park boundary extended all the way down Charles Street). Shortly before his death in 1952, KingGeorge VI designated Mount Vernon Estate - including much more territory than had been conveyed to him - as part as bequeathing it "to His Most Gracious Majesty's Crown throughout His Life" with specific instructions that "it may be used for public purposes only", effective January 1st 1957. On December 20th 1958 Queen Elizabeth II issued Order No 2145 which stated: "The site selected for Parliament Hill has long been an ideal spot for a new national capital—and Its close proximity to key transportation arteries makes it easy enoughfor anyone who wants it." On April 8th 1959 promotional material announced that work on Parliament Hill had commenced. Work continued intermittently through 1961 but soon stopped due to cost overruns; however ceremony marking groundbreaking took place on October 7th 1961 at exactly 4 pm local time at Queen Victoria Memorial Park (now Trinity United Methodist Church).
