Barnstable has been inhabited for over two thousand years and traces its roots back to the time when it was an unincorporated community on the eastern coast of Cape Cod. In 1798, Barnstable became part of the town of Plympton. The first settler in what would become Barnstable was Abraham Parsons who arrived in 1638 from Great Britain with his wife Hannah and five children under the age of 10. He built a small cabin on what is now South Street in what is now downtown Barnstable. A few weeks later he and his family moved to a more permanent location along Northshore Road which they called "Parsons Pond." They raised chickens, ducks, pigs, horses and cattle there until around 1641 when they sold their land to John Woolridge for $50 plus expenses. In 1798, following the creation of Plymouth County by an act of Parliament as a result of America's victory in the Revolutionary War, Barnstable became one of three towns within Plymouth County that were given autonomy by General George Washington as part of THE PROVINCIAL GOVERNMENT OF NEW ENGLAND (TPEN). The other two were Danvers and Woburn (all located within present-day Quincy). After TPE's dissolution in 1802 following British Invasion efforts throughout New England, all towns within Plymouth County except Barnstable were placed under common jurisdiction with Scituate (now Wellesley) as their governing center pursuant to Act No. 207 dated April 2nd 1802; thus ending any vestige of local control or governance among these diverse communities. As early as 1814 barnstormers had made their way into western Massachusetts - this was easily done since travel restrictions then existed prohibiting any person from traveling westward beyond Springfield without special permission from both Congress and Governor Adams! On July 12th 1814 Joel Chandler Jr., also known as The Pony Express rider took advantageof this restriction when he rode through town on his way east to Pittsfield checking out prospects for development near Mount Hope Cemetery; he not only attracted attention but also aroused some suspicion because he journeyed alone at night! resulting in numerous arrests during ensuing days! The first post office established in Barnstable was called Westville but it closed down due to low postage rates so foundations were laid for what would eventually become First Federal Bank which opened its doors on December 9th 1830 followed by Patriot Insurance Company which did business until 1865 when it merged into Berkshire Hathaway Inc.. As late as 1935 there remained just one store open in downtown Barnstable - that store being operated by Humble Hardware & Supply Co.. In 1957 First National Bank merger created Trustco Bankshares Ltd.;Trustco became dormant circa 1990s before re-opening again circa 2000s as First NatWest bank branch #1A . At present day there are no banks operating within downtown or surrounding neighborhoods - all businesses have either relocated or closed up shop over time due to changing demographics and economic conditions such as Wal-Mart becoming increasingly prevalent throughout much central MA starting around 2006! In recent years many people have taken up residence inside former manufacturing facilities/ warehouses located outside city limits providing housing options while still having access to essential public services including healthcare/emergency services etc...
