Cambridge, Massachusetts is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 24,572 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area and has been part of that region for more than three centuries. The first people to live in what is now Cambridge were the Natives of Ipswich District. The English settlers arrived in 1630 and came from East Anglia on the southeast coast of England. They brought with them their food storage skills and began to grow crops such as apples, corn, potatoes and beans. By 1635 they had built a small frame house on a spot where Harvard University now stands. In 1778 General Gage ordered all British subjects living within ten miles (16 km) of Boston to leave or face military detention. Some natives who refused to leave did not face any consequences but others were detained and some were burned at the stake. The town was named after King George II's father, King George III's brother-in-law, Prince Frederick of Wales (later Duke of Cumberland). When Cambridge became an actuated village it petitioned Parliament for incorporation as a borough on November 3, 1802; this petition was granted on January 10th following which organizational meetings took place under Mr Justice Hale's direction with six trustees chosen by lot from among those present at the first meeting. December 15th saw the laying out of streets by John Carr (a carpenter), then one of its trustees; it soon became quite fashionable for men born into wealthy families in London to move about without fear or inconvenience so great was their wealth hereabouts! On March 7th 1803 Mayor James Bowdoin bestowed upon it a coat-of-arms incorporating an image or bust representing every member “of his Majesty’s most Honourable Privy Council” then resident in England “to guard against Factions & Malice being provoked amongst us by Persons who have no Interest here” This started off as just another corporate logo until someone realized that if everyone had an image like this there would be little distinction between different parts of town – so instead each ward got its own design around 1807 followed by further changes throughout life culminating in 1918 when they merged into one large shield with stars around it! It wasn't until after World War II that Cambridge began becoming known as "the most intelligent city in America". After years during which much progress had been made but Silicon Valley rose up to take its place Cambridge quickly regained its lost ground academically speaking - although Silicon Valley retaines some advantages over other cities when measured against economic indicators such as jobs and GDP per capita etc however overall American Cities have begun moving away from heavy reliance on Research Institutes towards Economic Development Centers which are responsible for creating jobs rather than simply relying on research institutions
