Chicopee, Massachusetts is a town in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 10,717 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area. Chicopee has been home to an Native American tribe for over 350 years and was once a center of textile manufacturing. The first Europeans to visit Chicopee were French traders in 1636 who named it Pointe-à-Pitre. The name means "Island of the Hounds" because there was an island near the mouth of the river where hunters could find game. In 1763, when the Connecticut Colony was founded, Chicopee became one of its towns and remained so until 1803 when it became part of Plymouth County. In 1794–95 James Bowdoin founded Bowdoin College in what is now Brunswick Street in downtown Chicopee; this college would later become Dartmouth University. After coming to power in 1830 during president Andrew Johnson's administration, General Joel Chandler Harris destroyed many buildings including Bowdoin's old campus on Main Street between High and Dexter Streets on his estate called "Harrisville". Englishman Samuel Morse built a sawmill across from Harrisville soon after moving to America from Great Britain in 1837 and started transmitting Morse Code messages over telephone wires across New England using his house as a transmitter tower (this event also helped start America's electrical industry). The townspeople petitioned for incorporation as a village in 1846 but this petition was refused because there were only 7 residents living within 3 miles of each other and no schools or churches. In 1850–51 Mayor Wigglesworth appointed Jno Cushman as Town Clerk which gave him authority to issue licenses for farms and businesses without going through City Hall which had been closed by Mayor Grover Cleveland due to financial problems with the newly formed city government. In 1859–60 voters approved annexation by Worcester County making Chicopee one of its largest towns by total population at 11,819 residents (later reduced to 9,999 as Worcester County grew larger). On July 1st 1860 Chicopee became one municipality under Worcester Municipal Law No 681 A new high school opened its doors on September 8th 1910 with 100% attendance rate thanks largely to local parents goodwill donations made during 1909’s “Families Day” campaign organized by Mrs Gertrude Atherton (classmother), her daughters Hazel And Peggy Atherton Berger (1912-1996) and Dolores Jaffe McCarthy (1920-2011). It replaced Webster North High School which burned down on December 12th 1917 while students were taking final exams inside due to lack of fire extinguisher supplies! For 50 years Mrs Atherton served as Superintendent/Principal until her retirement in 2006 having raised over $500KUSD toward building renovations that are now complete! Today’s namesake Mrs Gertrude Atherton Berger still resides adjacent east side classroom complex housing both junior high boys & girls grades along with 2 staff apartments used by District 5uer director/principal & assistant deputy director during special events such as state tournaments etc...
