Franklin, Massachusetts is a town in Hampshire County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 9,590 at the 2010 census. It is the 5th-most populous municipality in Hampshire County and the most populous city in New England. The town began as part of what is now Watertown Square on the south side of downtown Franklin. In 1812, when Washington Irving moved from New York City to Franklinton (now part of Philadelphia), he purchased two lots on which later erected his home called Irving House.. This house served as both headquarters for Gouverneur Morris’s United States Senate Committee on Foreign Relations and also housed many members of Congress who traveled through Pennsylvania during their term from 1813-1815 including James K. Polk and Salmon Pelly. On November 15th 1830 residents voted to incorporate as a town under the name “Franklin” following ratification by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts electorate on December 6th 1830; this vote followed earlier petitions for incorporation that were rejected by selectmen due to lack of signatures from registered electors not living within the boundaries prepared for incorporation). At first only male citizens over twenty-one could vote but this limitation was lifted twelve months later so females could join in voting along with males when they reached 21 years old (this change coincided with giving women full civil rights).
