Haverhill, Massachusetts is a small town in Hampshire County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 8,648 at the 2010 census. The town is part of the Boston metropolitan area. The first permanent European settlers were two brothers who arrived from England in 1636 and built a cabin on the Fresh Pond site. They named their village "Haverhill" after Haverfield, Berkshire, England where they lived. In 1768 Colonel George Washington sent his forces under General John Burgoyne to attack the British forces stationed at Saratoga and when they reached Haverhill they found that all of the inhabitants had fled because of Indian attacks which had been going on for several weeks. In 1803 Congress created Hampshire County out of parts of Worcester and Norfolk counties; Haverhill became its county seat. That year also saw the founding of what is now Holyoke College by Reverend James Mooney and Drury Lane School by Reverend Jonathan Edwards (the father both of American poet Ralph Waldo Emerson). The first post office opened in 1818 with Paul Revere as its first employee. In 1825 an act was passed providing for township form within each county so that Haverhill could be developed as an agricultural center with good location for transportation across open country to marketplaces near Boston proper. This Act led to establishment of townships throughout rural Hampshire County including Westborough (1827), Amherst (1828), Northampton (1829), Reading (1830), Needham (1831), Somerville (1832), Quincy (1833) and Belmont/Framingham Township in 1938-1939 following incorporation into Middlesex County from Essex Districts 1-4 inclusive under pressure from New Bedford Mayor John Fenton over Railroad concerns about potential competition from Springfield through Framingham Valley before it was finally surrendered to New Bedford after some community protestations culminating in a referendum held on November 15th 1941 asking residents whether or not they should become part of Middlesex Counties rather than continue as separate districts subject to New Bedford influence alone

In 1832 Haverhill was incorporated as a city under the name Newton but with no vote or input from residents until 1840 when they voted to change their name back to Haverhill after Ayer's death in office. The city officially changed its name on July 1st, 1868 to honor Rev. Ezra Stiles Haverhill (1807-1880), one of America’s leading Baptist missionaries and founders of what would become Yale University and other religious institutions around New Haven Connecticut
The town of Haverhill, Massachusetts was founded by the Pilgrims in 1638. The first permanent English settlers in the area were the Winslowes, who arrived in 1641. In 1722, a large tract of land was bought by Captain John Winthrop and converted into an agricultural farm. The town began to develop as a transportation center due to its location on Route 9A and its position along the Great Lakes region. By 1867, Haverhill had a population of 1,500 people and it became an incorporated town with a government based on representation through committees. In 1916, Haverhill adopted a municipal charter that granted it voting rights and other civil rights. From 1967-1975,Haverhill was governed by a Mayor–Council system with one mayoral term per year.
