Marlborough, Massachusetts was a town in Essex County, Massachusetts and is now part of the town of Lawrence. The population was 1,883 at the 2010 census. The first settlements in what is now Marlborough were made on Fells Point Peninsula by John Wentworth in 1769. He named his new settlement after his maternal ancestor, Lord Burlington of Marlborough (1610-1672). In 1775, when Colonel John Adams and his troops evacuated Boston for Saratoga, they left behind a blacksmith shop and several farms hereabouts. These early settlers were among the earliest to come to America. In 1801 Marlborough became part of the United States of America as section 10 of Worcester County. The town's first school house was built near where present day Academy Street and Hennepin Avenue intersect. This building served as the town hall until 1830 when it burned down. The next year saw an addition to the school system with the opening of North High School which stood on what is now State Street between West First Street And West Second Street NW. This school served students through 1834 when it moved to its current location across from Central Library on Main Street NW. During most of its history Marlborough had no municipal government other than that delegated by Congress under Article IV Section 8 thereof in 1788-89; however this changed with the incorporation of Lawrence into Middlesex County in 1802 (the same year thatMarlborough became incorporated). A select committee was appointed by General Court Under Secrecy No 9233 concerning certain matters connected with elections for magistrates etc., but no action appears to have been taken upon its recommendations or reports until 1840s when a meeting beheld at home of Mr G W Headcorn to consider some measures relative thereto resulted in organizing a board under Elisha Goode who soon resigned because he could not agree upon any joint resolutions or nominations without reference thereto to either body which he did not believe ought properly so circumstanced; thenceforward all electioneering within limits defined by law must take place through Committees appointed jointly thereunto nominated by both Houses before taking effect; Elections are hereafter held open throughout every county therein excepting Suffolk where they are closed at least two months prior thereto by special order Of The Gov’t
Marlborough is a town in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, located on the eastern border of the state. The population was 1,636 at the 2010 census. The town was first settled in 1634 by Puritan settlers from England and has been continuously inhabited since that time. The first school in Marlborough was built in 1635 and was used as a log cabin by settlers. In 1792, the town voted to become an independent parish with its own minister. On January 1, 1803, Marlborough became part of Revere Parish. In 1898, the Boston & Maine Railroad completed a line from Plymouth to Marlborough and made it possible for people to grocery shop and buy goods at local stores without traveling far away. The railroad also created jobs for local residents who worked on the tracks. In 1910, Marlborough voters passed a resolution requesting that Boston give it back its charter as an independent parish under Revere Parish so that the town could be self-reliant again. On December 2nd of that year, Boston granted Marlborough its independence once again and began using their own minister instead of coming to blows with Revere Parish over which church should have jurisdiction over what part of Plymouth County they lived in - an issue which had plagued the town since its inception!
