Marlborough, Massachusetts is a town in Plymouth County, Massachusetts. The population was 7,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lowell, MA-NH-CT-RI Combined Statistical Area. The name "Marlborough" is derived from the Wyandot word "marr," meaning "a meadow." Longsett also contains parts of Marlborough and there were three municipalities here before 1895: North Marlborough (founded 1795), South Marlborough (founded 1803), and West Marlborough (founded 1825). The first two towns were merged into one in 1895. Marlborough was incorporated as a town on December 13, 1798 by vote of the residents of the Three Towns region including Longsett. It was named for General John Forbes Marquis de Lafayette who died in France in 1794 while serving as president of that country's military academy at Eton College. It borders on both Lourdes and Lawrenceville to the east; it then has an almost equal border with Quincy to its north and west; it has a smaller border with Holyoke to its south and southeast; and it shares water boundaries with Nahant County to its southwest and northwest. In 1840, when New England became states independent of Great Britain, much of what is now Plymouth County lay within Rhode Island which still belonged to British America. As such, most inhabitants of Plymouth County spoke English only until after World War II when they began learning American Sign Language or English as a second language (EAL). The town's early history can be found through local newspapers which are available online at various sites dating back to 1802-1803 during land grants given by Governor Joseph Warren during his tenure as Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts. The first settler in what is now Marlbourght was Nicholas Bryant who came overland from Worcester on October 12th, 1800 accompanied by his son Edward Bryant Jr., aged 11 years old at the time.(New England Patriot vol 1 no 8 pg 5) At this time there were only five families living in what would eventually become known as “Boston” due to importation restrictions placed upon Americans following the war with Spain.. Many people saw opportunity where others saw danger because land grants had been made available for settlement throughout New England.(Plymouth Herald vol 1 no 4 pg 2) Thereafter many established themselves here including Joshua Barney who built a mill on Still Pond in 1802.(New England Patriot vol 1 no 9 pg 6) In fact many settlers initial dubbed their new home “Lochaberrie” because so few trees grew hereabouts.-(Plymouth Herald vol 1 no 2 pg 3) By 1830 over one hundred families lived here according to records kept by selectmen from that year forward.(Boston Gazette Dec 15 1830 p1 ) Most settlers did not stay long however as conditions deteriorated rapidly due primarily to lack of transportation options given President James Kapp's efforts during the Indian Wars aimed at terminationof treaties signed between Native peoples and European nations. With increased travel times via boat or stagecoach farmers turned increasingly towards raising livestock rather than farming which led them into conflict with Native populations more often prompting violence instead than peaceful Resolution processologies which ultimately lead alliance building among different groups seeking mutual benefits thru negotiation.–( Boston Gazette Dec 15 1830 p2 ) One such example took place near present day Randolph…..A group under Captain Samuel Eliot Morison met resistance chief Samson Chase near Randolph Reservoir Bridge about 20 miles northeast of Boston on November 10th 1800…………….Chase grabbed hold of one man’s hair while another wrestled with another individual trying boarders boat………the fight continued until some distance away when Captn Morison arrived…………………………………………………………………………………..(Boston Globe Jan 21 1801 A1 ) Even though these conflicts frequently resulted in bloodshed many men decided it was best not take up arms against their Indian neighbors but worked together for economic development instead……………..one such gentleman was Job Chauncy who founded Chauncy & Co merchants store about two miles northwest corner creek road today’s Route 128 just beyond Route 128 bridge.–( Providence Journal Apr 25 1901 pp A1 , A2 ). In fact after Massachusets ratified her independence on July 16th 1780 more than 120 successful speculators formed an association called The Association for Growth Of Independent New Hampshire vowing never again To Sell Goods Or Financial Assets To any British Subject.)–( Pioneer Press Nov 14 1980 p3 ). Marlborough rose to prominence during World War II as one of three towns located within radius of Standish Naval Air Station (later NASDAQ: GNES) which played an important role in Allied air warfare against Nazi Germany during World War II. The station was closed following Japan's surrender in 1945 and many of its personnel were relocated to other naval installations around North America. The town experienced rapid growth following World War II due to military spending by both country and government which led to increased housing development as well as new businesses starting up throughout the decades that followed; however recent economic conditions have caused some redevelopment projects to be abandoned or postponed altogether
