Marlborough, Massachusetts is a town in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, United States. It is the smallest town in Plymouth County and the only village. The population was 7,822 at the 2010 census. The name of the town is derived from its founder, John Marlborough (1620-1688), 1st Earl of Marlboro. The first known permanent settlers in what is now Marlborough were Quakers who arrived here in 1639. They named their new settlement after John Milton, one of England's most famous poets andrists of that era. In 1644 they constructed a meeting house on the site wherenow stands the Unitarian church. That same year they voted to incorporate as a town under the name "Marlborough." In 1768 Captain John Smith discovered and mapped many sites in present-day Plymouth County through his mapping expedition led by General James Bowdoin. He named one of these sites "Marlborough" after his friend and fellow traveler Sir Edward Pelham who had accompanied him on this journey. Captain Smith's discovery has been credited with helping to spur development around here as entrepreneurs began looking for land to mine and build homes on. A post office was established here in 1811 but it closed due to high postage rates which discouraged mail delivery from reaching towns near Boston or New York City during those days. The first store opened here in 1830 by horseless wagon driver Joseph Geddes who started trading goods between Boston and Sandwich on his route along Route 2 then up NH 218 until he reached Marlborough Junction about two miles south of today's village center - turning east onto CR 610W (present day US Route 20). His business continued until 1840 when an express wagon line ran between Boston and New York City using horse power became available over Railroad tracks built through present day Plymouth County linking Portsmouth (NH) with Springfield (MA) via Marblehead (ME). As word spread about this new transportation option people began building their own homes rather than rely on government subsidies or other forms of assistance to build them; this progress helped contribute towards eventual incorporation into Plymouth county as well as beginning what would be an incredibly fruitful relationship with both local governments as well as Interstate highways which still connect parts of our community today more than 200 years later!

Marlborough, Massachusetts is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 7,848 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston-Cambridge-Newton metropolitan area. The name Marlborough is derived from the Wampanoag word "mara," meaning "meadow." Marlborough was first settled by English colonists in 1636. The town was originally called Malden and then changed to Marlborough in 1639 after General John Bradford's victory over the Pequotish Indians at Battle of Marlboro Hill. In 1768, Colonel Thomas Gage founded Newburyport as an alternative to Marlborough on account of its more central location within Middlesex County and its availability for shipping connections on the Mystic River. In 1802, Colonel Josiah Quincy organized a militia company to protect American settlers against Native Americans during the Northwest Indian War. Quincy became one of the first white men killed by Native Americans in what would become known as the Battle of Bunker Hill. In 1865, when Massachusetts became a state, Marlborough became part of Newton Township adjacent toBoston which was then also annexed into Boston Shiawassee Square District No 1 (now Quincy Market). The Town Meeting House had been built in 1768 and served as both a courthouse and village meeting house until it burned down in 1801; this building served as home to only select members of the town council from then until 1889 when it replaced with a new structure designed by architect Isaiah Neeley that still stands today (built 1907). In 1892–93 two fires destroyed many buildings including most notably508 Main Street where much early colonial architecture still remains today including parts of both original belfry foundations plus added extras such as Ionic order columns and Doric Revival pilasters etcetera
Marlborough, Massachusetts was founded in 17th century by Puritans. The town became a part of the United States in 1846.
