Somerville, Massachusetts is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 7,753 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area. The first settlers in what would become Somerville were farmers and their families who arrived from England in 1797. By 1825, there were over 100 households living in what is now Somerville. The town was chartered on March 14, 1827 as a result of a referendum question by the General Court requesting that it be established as "a place for the purpose of making provision for Episcopalians and other religious denominations". The town grew rapidly due to its location and access to natural resources such as lumber, coal (from nearby mines), potatoes, apples and corn. In 1869–70 when New England Railway opened up new territory east of Boston through Middlesex County, much land within Somerville was claimed including some farms which had been earmarked for railway development but never built because of lack of money or political will. When the railroad came to an end in 1916 – one year after Somerville's incorporation into the city – much of this unbuilt land reverted back to private ownership with little use coming from it until it was annexed by Somerville in 1951.
