The ARGs were simple devices that fired a projectile from a single shot chamber located at the breech-face of the gun. These guns were very effective against game animals, such as deer, squirrels, and rabbits, and were popular among farmers for their simplicity and easy use. In 1907, Mr. Charles Fenton introduced the first airgun in America to the market, which he named the Crosman Carbine Air Gun. This gun was designed as an agricultural tool to hunt game using compressed air instead of fossil fuels. The Crosman Carbine Air Gun quickly became one of America’s most popular firearms, and was used by hunters all over the country. In 1939, Reginald Fenton purchased Crosman carbines from Mr. Charles Fenton and continued production under his own name until 1959 when Crosman carbines were phased out in favor of new design rifles known as AIM-9B series pistols. During this time period Crosman also manufactured shotguns using gas operated weapons such as pump shotguns and lever-action shotguns that shot pellets or buckshot roundsinstead of BBs or rifle rounds like other manufacturers did at that time. West Springfield is a town in Massachusetts, located in the Worcester County seat. The population was 26,724 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area. The town was founded on May 16, 1795 by Abraham Lincoln and his brothers Isaac and George Washington as a small farming community west of Boston. The first settlers were white men who had come overland from England and North America to escape religious persecution there. They named their community after Reverend William Westfall, an English clergyman who had helped them find safe passage. In 1802, when Worcester County was created, West Springfield became part of it and its parish priest became the first pastor of the new county seat. In 1827, construction began on what would become the first brick church in Massachusetts—the First Congregational Church of Christ Scientist (later called All Souls). The building opened in 1830 and served as the town's center until it burned down in 1835. A second church was built on Green Street near where present-day State House stands in 1842; this one served as both the town's central library for twenty years and also housed its first public school district headquarters. In 1865–66, a group of merchants led by John Davenport bought land along present-day Arlington Road east of West Springfield to create what would become Middletown Township. By 1898, however, most businesses within Middletown had relocated or closed because of competition from larger towns such as Somerville or Hartford acrossriver in Middlesex County. When Worcester County dissolved into four separate districts – Southbridge/Easton/Watertown (now Watertown), Northbridge/Worcester (now Framingham), and Northampton (now Holyoke) – West Springfield remained within Worcester District #1 but with no representation on its Board of Selectmen until 1933 when it gained representation with voter approval under then-selectman David Hale. From that point forward, West Springfield has been fully incorporated into Worcester County government with full voting rights except for limited matters specifically delegated to other districts which are still governed by Selectmen today.. The population in West Springfield decreased from 17,000 in 1960 to 10,500 in 2000 due to suburbanization and other factors.
