Bay City is a small town in the San Joaquin Valley of California. It is located about 30 miles (48 km) south-southeast of Fresno and 100 miles (160 km) north-northwest of Sacramento. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census[1]. Bay City is part of the Fresno–Madera, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1851 by brothers John and Jacob Baylis, who named it for their father, George Baylis. The Baylis family operated a ferry service across the San Joaquin River from their home on New Street to points near Yosemite National Park before selling the business to Captain H.C. Richardson in 1873. In 1916, Captain Richardson's son, Harry C., purchased the land that now makes up bay city and built a large cotton gin and distillery thereon which still operates today as "Harry C." Richardson Distilling Company. In 1933, Alfred Kapp developed what would become bay city's first shopping district called "The Arcade". Today's mall began as a two-story court house on First Street with 50 stores built between 1926 and 1932 by local contractor James Wolkowitz under orders from then-Mayor Edmond Beall himself. A year later, Kapp opened his first grocery store - an 8x8 inch building - in what is now downtown bay city.[2] In 1957, Jerry Wehrli moved his grocery store from Chico to bay city after buying it from its original developer; originally designed as one block wide but eventually expanding to more than two blocks because of interest throughout central valley lands (and other parts of western USA) in our high quality produce items available only here at Wehrli's store![3] In 1969 when weirli sold his store he had over 1400 customers![4] After Jerry Weirli passed away some years ago one could still find hand made artifacts made during prohibition such as “Bogart” Scotch eggs that were hard boiled outside on bricks outside until they cracked open revealing an inferior product because state law prohibited this type of egg production... these cleverly made items are very valuable collector’s items today!
