Jesuit missionaries arrived in Bay City in 1701 () with Father Jean Baptiste de la Salle (), who built Notre Dame de la Pointe du Lac (now part of University Of Michigan) on what is now Orleans St., just east of present day downtown BayCity (). Father La Salle also built two smaller churches: one at present day Grand Rapids Ave., northwest corner of Washington St., east side of current day Lafayette Ave., southeast cornerof Woodward Ave.; and another at presentday Depot Square northeast cornerof Washtenaw St./Grandma Ave./Sturgeon Island/Washington St.-and across from old Cadillac Plant where today's Joe Louis Arena stands (. . . ). In 1716–1717 Father La Salle founded St Josephs Convent (now Mother Teresa Catholic School), located between Main & Buchanan streets (), southwest cornerof Ottawa Street (); it became one of America's first religious schools (). Jesuit priests also founded mission stations at Redford Heights () northwest cornerof Gratiot Avenue (); Indiana Dr (); White Sands Rd (); Northfield Rd (); Maplewood Dr.; Arlington Heights (); Clinton Township () south central edgeof town off I-94; we are outside today's Detroit metropolitan area). Bay City is a city on the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The population was 7,824 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1854 by Captain George W. Macomb and his family as Bay City Landing on the current site of downtown Bay City. The original town was located on the lower peninsula and was only accessible by boat or foot during those early years. In 1875, a railroad station was built in downtown Bay City, making it easier for residents to get around. By 1907, the city had grown enough that a main street (now State Street) was established and named after local pioneer Captain John Prentice. As the town grew, so did its economy; businesses opened up to service growing populations in both downtown and outlying areas. In 1958, Bay City became an incorporated municipality with its own government and police force; this made it one of the first cities in Michigan to have its own elected officials as well as public libraries and schools within its boundaries.
