In 1906, when Bay City became one of the first cities in Michigan to become complete Municipal Airport Authority with its own airport (BayCity Municipal Airport), it also began developing into an important commercial center within its boundaries due to its ability to serve as both a departure point for passengers traveling from downtown Lansing and East Lansing and also as an arrival point for passengers flying into Grand Rapids or Clinton Township through the airport's gates onto local roads near downtown Bay City proper.
