The first post office in Bay City was established in 1846; it was renamed Point Defiance in 1893 following an effort by then-Mayor John Purdy to improve relations between bay county residents andPoint Defiance descendants living elsewhere in Michigan who continued to call their village "Point Defiance." During World War II many veterans settled permanently or temporarily in Bay City as workers on shipyards or other war-related projects across Mackinac Island; this area later became known as Veterans'town because most residents were discharged there after hostilities ended. Many subsequent families moved into nearby Isabella Beach during that time but eventually all but two buildings within Veterans'town were demolished when sandbars rose up around the peninsula after Hurricane Ike hitTL
