In 1945, Benton Harbor became home to both Ford Motor Company's Rouge plant (now part of Oak Park) and General Motors' old Chevrolet factory before being merged into Detroit later that year; however, much of the city's commercial infrastructure remains today intact including its sizable lakeside shopping district which dates back to 1908 when J C Penney opened its flagship store here; today it is one of downtown Detroit's most popular tourist destinations renowned for its architecture and shopping opportunities along Fifth Avenue between State Street and Woodward Drive).
