In 1837, when Michigan became a territory of the United States, Berkley was included within Washtenaw County. In 1840, it was annexed by Lansingburgh Township which was established within Shiawassee Township following the partition of Michigan into township form during that year's statehood process. On October 8, 1850, while still part of Shiawassee Township (), Berkley voted to become its own municipality with a population of 1,150; this vote followed similar votes by other village sites throughout Michigan that same year as part of preparations for becoming organized municipalities under §249(a) of the Michigan Constitution (known today as Municipal law §823). On May 3rd 1870 there was another vote at Village Hall to annex Stonington into our Municipality effective July 1st following a petition from Mrs A B S Ivey asking us to do so based upon her residence located just east and south side Of Main Street And School House where her children were attending school Our new TownHall building was completed February 10th 1871 On November 5th 1880 we had our first election which resulted in Mr J H Heineman being elected Mayor with 54%Of The Vote

Berkley is home to the Berkley School District and the Berrien County Sheriff's Office. Berkley is also the birthplace of President Abraham Lincoln. The first settler in what is now Berkley was James Sloan, who arrived on horseback in 1833. In 1836, John Scherman built a cabin near present-day Berkley and named it "Scherman's Ferry". In 1837, Peter Goss moved his family to what is now Berkley from Isabella Township in Shiawassee County, Michigan. By 1840, there were 10 settlers living in Berkley. In 1849, Isaac Schaefer settled on land that would become part of Berkleys border with Isabella Township. He named his farmlands "Schaefer's Land", after himself and two brothers - Isaac and Jacob Schaefer - who had emigrated from Germany earlier that year. By 1850, there were 9 settlers living in BerkLEY – 5 men and 4 women. On July 16th of that year, three men discovered gold alongshore about 2 miles east of today's village of Park Rapids when they went out fishing for trout using a net put into navigational hazard created by an abandoned log fortificationship being moored off shore at that time (the Fort William). They brought back 139 pounds (60 kg) of gold nuggets which they smelted down to create coins worth $1 each at their initial discovery site which became known as "Goldsville". The town name successively came to be first used for Goldsville when other towns south of Grand Rapids took up similar namesakes: Westland (1860), Eastland (1861), Malvern (1862), Allendale (1863), Springport (1864), Harbor Springs (1865). This pattern continued until all but one township changed its name to something more associated with its current community or industry within 25 years; this exception being Highland Heights which kept its original name until 1959 when it changed to Dearborn Heights due to suburban growth adjacent to its borders! "The Village", published in 1903 by Houghton Mifflin Company historian Samuel Eliot Morison documents how residents gradually began demanding better schools for their children outside the agricultural economy whereas farmers boys started working on farms during school hours beginning as early as 1860 becoming self-sufficient once school finished so they could help their parents till the fields or run errands such as getting milk for their families while still attending school! It wasn't until after World War II did employees begin working long hours outside employment not only picking up some slack left behind by those lost during World War II but also helping build postwar suburbs all around downtown Belleville!"
