Clawson was first settled in 1827 by Nicholas Clawson and his family. They arrived on the Michigan River from Illinois. The town started as a small village, with only 10 residents, but it grew quickly due to its location on the river and its easy access to goods. By 1830, Clawson had a population of 50 people. In 1835, Clawson became the county seat of Jackson County. In 1847, Clawson was purchased by John Dickey for $4,000 from Nicholas's widow. Dickey renamed the town Clawson after himself and built a mill there. He also established a school in Clawson which served as the primary educational institution in the area until 1862 when Jackson County erected its own school system. The community experienced rapid growth during the 1850s due to natural resources such as coal and lumber that were available nearby. By 1860, Clawson had over 100 residents and boasted two hotels and several businesses including a grocery store and post office. By 1870, however, economic conditions had changed and business declined rapidly; most of the townsfolk left for better opportunities elsewhere in Michigan or Ohio. During World War II, hundreds of war-related jobs were created in rural areas like Clawson thanks to wartime production sites such as Ford Motor Company's plant at Rouge Lake near Detroit (now Dearborn) and DuPont's plant at Redford Township (now Ross Township). However, many of these jobs ended up leaving once hostilities ended; many villagers took up farming or other low-wage endeavors instead of following factory employment options during wartime times.
