Coldwater is a small town in Battle Creek County, Michigan. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids–Wyoming Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Coldwater" was given to the settlement by General George Washington in 1792 when he and his army crossed the lower Shiawassee River on their way to battle the British at Yorktown. The general called this area "the coldest water in all of America." In 1827, James McGillicuddy, a fur trader from Quebec, founded what would become Coldwater Township. He named it for his native place of Coldstream in Scotland. The first post office opened in Coldwater on July 10, 1828. In 1840, two brothers built a log cabin near present-day downtown and started selling groceries and other items from their store. They were known as the McLaughlin Brothers Grocery Store. In 1851, John Suter established one of the largest lumberyards in Michigan with his sawmill on Contoocook River near present-day White Cloud Lake. Suter also became involved with politics and served as sheriff from 1858 to 1860; he was later elected governor of Michigan twice (1874 and 1886). A railroad line was built through Coldwater Township in 1865 which contributed to its growth; today's Main Street runs parallel to that line between downtown and Contoocook Landing Park east of town center. post office closed October 14th 1870 due to lack of customers

Coldwater is a town located in Isabella County, Michigan, United States. The population was 2,599 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids–Mijon Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what is now Coldwater was John Fleming in 1824. He built a log cabin on the banks of the Ottawa River. In 1827, he married Anna Van Hise and together they started to farm land around Coldwater. In 1836, James Kempton established a sawmill and gristmill on the Ottawa River near present-day Coldwater. He also built a house and millrace which still stand today. A post office called Coldwater was established in 1837, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. Coldwater became an incorporated village in 1875, but it reverted to its earlier name of Coldwater Township on January 1, 1916. On April 14th of that year, World War I began when America entered into World War I against Germany with declared war goals of preventing German intervention into Europe. As part as patriotic duty, many residents turned out for military service and helped with procurement efforts ans donations to various charities throughout the war effort including sending food parcels back home to their families during those difficult times). After the war ended there were few major changes until 1925 when township trustees decided that consolidation would be desirable due to growing population density and an increasing number of businesses seeking incorporation into township limits (the result being that present day CoolWater became one large municipality).
