East Grand Rapids is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Kent County. As of the 2010 census, its population was 54,471. The city is home to East Grand Rapids Hospital, one of three hospitals in Kent County and one of the largest healthcare providers in the area with an annual budget of $2 billion. It also has several major research institutions including University at Buffalo Medical Center, Wayne State University and Mackinac Center for Health Research. In 1835, James Kellar purchased 640 acres (250 hectares) northwest of present-day East Grand Rapids from George Armitage for $5 per acre ($27 per hectare). He named it "Kellar's Land" after himself and founded what would become Kellar Township which became part of Kent County in 1840. On July 1, 1850, Kellar donated all 20 blocks east side streets adjacent to his land south along US 231 to create Village Square which served as the town center between that year and 1860 when East Lansing was established nearby as the second village on that road network after Rochester (at that time called Henrietta Township). In 1861 when Lansing was established as well as other villages across Michigan following General Order No. 990 issued by Governor Arthur Stonington because there was no central government control over these areas following Indian Removal policies it became clear that Village Square could not accommodate enough residents so a new town square/arkground had to be constructed about two miles north on I-95 just east of present day downtownEast Grand Rapids opposite Richland Park where today's Southdale Shopping Centre is located

However, during World War II East Grand Rapids experienced some significant decline due to wartime shortages of food and materials. This caused significant losses for the city; however, it continued to grow through later years despite these challenges. In recent years, East Grand Rapids has seen strong progress made in terms of economic development which has led to increased popularity within the city itself and also attracted new businesses and residents who have helped contribute to its continuing success.
