The area that now makes up Escanaba was first settled by French fur traders during the 17th century. The first European to visit what is now Escanaba was Pierre Marquette on July 14, 1679; headed westwards from Ottawa (now Ottawa County), Illinois along the lower Missaukee River towards Mackinac Island. In 1701–02, George Rogers Clark discovered and named what is now Escanaba Bay after his friend John Graves Simcoe who had also explored this region for France during the same time period. In 1812–13 Ignatius Donnelly built a cabin on a bluff overlooking present day downtown with an interior designed by himself and later enlarged by his son-in-law Nicholas Coles; Donnelly became known as "Donnelly's Bluff". The town began to grow rapidly due to new transportation connections made by Woodward Avenue across Clearwater Lake from Presque Isle Bayou in eastetime Detroit; thence viaoine Street into downtown Escanaba proper; then eastward along Woodward until it reached Presque Isle Bayou whereupon it crossed over onto land grant from General John Pemberton which ran concurrent with modern US Highway 10 just south of downtown In 1836 Governor Cass set aside land north of present day Woodward Avenue for school purposes when he created Washtenaw County out of part of St Clair Township; this site would eventually become Jackson Park where today's State Fairgrounds are located. In 1840 Donnellys moved their cabin downriver towards what would become present day Gratiot Beach before finally settling there around 1850s. By 1860 most residents had relocated away from Donnelly's bluff due to floods caused by Huron River receding river banks upstream following years of heavy logging activity adjacent to Clearwater Lake Erie.; some however stayed behind because they could not find suitable sites inland or downstream within Washtenaw County for their growing town.) Two main railroad lines passed through town: one connecting Detroit with Chicago via Saginaw (now Midland) Valley Railroad Company Line #1&2 while another connected Flint with Cleveland via Ann Arbor Junction Railroad Company Line #3&4 nearpresentday Gratiot Beach) pioneer farmers such as James Jarrell started raising corn on nearby flatlands beginning about 1800 while others continued developing rice farming operations off Fort Harrison Creek into present day Acosta Township beginning about 1830s.; lumbering soon followed although much early building occurred at Clintonville Landing on current day Gratiot Beach next to Saginaw River.) In 1851 James Mclntyre founded McLntyre Hardware Store & Mill at corner of Main & Woodward Streets becoming one of first successful businesses in town.) By 1870 most residents were again living inside downtown buildings although there were some small fishing villages dotting both sides of Presque Isle Bayou.-It should be noted that almost all events taking place in white settler society took place outside DowntownEscanaba while African American society slowly evolved inside this segregated environment characterized mainly by residential segregation.) Including future Mayor Leslie McFarlane who attended postsecondary school here before entering politics). By 1910 most residents still lived inside DowntownEscanaba although there were some small fisher settlements dotting both sides of Presque Isle Bayou.–It should be noted that almost all events taking place in white settler society took place outside DowntownEscanaban while African American society slowly evolved inside this segregated environment characterized mainly by residential segregation.) Escanaba is a small, unincorporated community in Washtenaw County, Michigan, United States. The population was 111 at the 2010 census. It is located on the east side of the mouth of the Kawkawa River. The town began as an agricultural settlement in 1834, when two men from Flint went to Escanaba to buy corn for their farm. They were not able to find any corn but did find watermelons and other vegetables. The name "Escanaba" was given to this site by John A. Stephenson, who had been brought overland from Canada and visited Escanaba several times during his journey across the country in 1836-37. He named one of the creeks which flow into the Kawkawa River after Captain George Washington's army under General John Forbes (1787-1835). A post office was established at Escanaba on February 11, 1835, by J C Pritchard and Wm H Lunsford. In 1841 it was renamed Starkeville after Elisha Starke (1785-1856), who had been a US congressman from that town before becoming a missionary in India. A new courthouse was built in 1850 and enlarged in 1865; it burned down in 1870 but was replaced by a more recent building that still stands today. In 1901 there were only six residents living here; four of them worked for local farms or businesses. By 1910 there were ninety people living here, all of whom worked on farms or ranching operations outside of town limits. The population decreased slowly until 1940 when World War II forced many people out of rural areas and into cities; by 1950 only twelve people lived here permanently (six farmers and eight nonfarmers). With the changes in methods of transportation during the 1960s and 1970s, some residents moved away altogether while others remained for various reasons such as jobs at nearby plants or access to education opportunities beyond what they could get back home. Today there are just six residents remaining: five women and one man who operates a farm outof town
The town of Escanaba, Michigan was founded in 1837 by General James McLean. The town was named for the Escanaba River, which flows through the town. The first post office was established in Escanaba in 1838. In 1842 the United States Post Office moved from Detroit to Escanaba and continued to be called Detroit until it closed in 1916.
