In 1840, a small battery of 12 cannons, which were later purchased by the town, was erected on Court Street between Park and First Streets. This battery became known as the "Escanaba Battery". In 1863, the Escanaba Battery (now part of USMCR) opened fire on Confederate troops during the Battle of Gettysburg, killing more than 100 Americans. In 1865, General John Sibley's brigade arrived in town and began construction of Fort Snelling. The fort served as a military post until 1898 when it was surrendered to Spanish forces.

When Escanaba was incorporated as a city in 1903, it had a population of just over 2,000 people and it relied heavily on agriculture until World War II when industry took over and new housing developments began to be built downtown. After World War II ended, most development stopped due to lack of demand from commuters who commuted into Grand Rapids or Detroit but some new businesses have begun cropping up in recent years such as restaurants, bars, and retail stores mixed with government offices which are still used today by local government including police departments, fire departments, libraries/museums/art galleries etc., making Escanaba one of northcentral Michigan's most vibrant cities with plenty going on every day that you could get your hands on!
