Escanaba is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the seat of Escanaba County. The population was 25,611 at the 2010 census, making it the second-largest city in Michigan after Detroit. It is part of the Flint metropolitan area which had a total population of 634,994 as of 2018. As of 2013, Escanaba was also one of 10 Michigan cities with a rank from "greatest to weakest" in terms of quality of life according to Kiplinger's Personal Finance magazine. The city was founded by speculators from London in 1837 as an outpost on the Rouge River for potential steamboats that would carry coal to nearby mines. The name came about because white settlers called alligator swamp "Escanaba," meaning "the place where eagles nest." In 1875, James Dickson purchased 640 acres (253 ha) along East Lake Street and named it after his father-in-law, General David Dixon; this land later became known as Dickson Township and still covers much of what is now Escanaba. In 1892 when Escanoba was incorporated as a village, it consisted only of 101 homes built on lots donated by citizens or surveyed from scratch by George Waring; construction began on only two blocks south of present day Park Avenue before halted due to lack funds. By 1902 there were 2200 residents living in 147 buildings spread over 8 square miles (21 km²). On July 1, 1907, smallpox cases started arriving in town from outlying areas around Flint; within three weeks most people had developed immunity and no more smallpox cases occurred until 1915 when an effective vaccine program was initiated following outbreaks at Grand Rapids and Ann Arbor schools In 1916 founder James Dickson died suddenly leaving behind several thousand dollars worth of equipment including four steamboats used for transportation purposes and other properties including land east side parkway now 5th Ave And Ives Road

It is the seat of Bay County and was founded in 1837 as a village on the east side of Escanaba Lake. It became an incorporated city in 1903. Escanaba's rich history can be found from its founding by George Washington Carver to its current day with various businesses and organizations that have been headquartered here over the years including American Motors Corporation (1961-1983), Eastern Michigan University (1965-present), Ford Motor Company (1901-2006), and JPMorgan Chase & Co. (2008-present). The town first formed on the east side of Escanaba Lake where farmers used to gather waterlogged logs for transportation or just cut them down and transport them across the lake to sell. In 1837, when Detroit was annexed by Bay County, Escanaba was one of several villages that were established within what would become Detroit Township. By 1851, when numbers had grown sufficiently for it to be organized into a municipality under the name "Escanaba", it boasted of a population of about 100 residents. In 1903, as part of efforts to encourage settlement on Gratiot Peninsula by immigrants who could not find homes in Detroit due to discrimination against their ethnicity or religion, Escanaba became an incorporated city with boundaries similar to those today including land north of Gratiot Boulevard on the west side of town and east off Ionia Road on the east side - all owned by private individuals or companies who hoped this new area would become more productive agricultural land like what they saw growing around them in downtown Detroit while prices for farmlands remained high; something which did not happen however and eventually led to significant problems such as overcrowding within City limits leading citizens petitioning for annexation into neighboring Oakland Township beginning in 1916 without success until finally being accepted after much public pressure two years later which increased following World War I when demand increased for workers among war industries; this annexation having no impact whatsoever economically speaking becauseOakland Township still enjoyed high farmland values relative to properties near DowntownDetroit making it difficult for anyone but wealthy people actually living inside City Limits without Sacrifice!
