However, during the postwar years many small businesses remained open while large companies drove out or closed their operations within the city limits (Ford leaving in 1948 and Chrysler coming later). These demolished neighborhoods are now home to thousands more people who have moved into properties vacated by previous residents or developers after tax laws changed following World War II that discouraged suburban growth within Dearborn Heights/Alfredston Township boundaries away from downtown Detroit although these areas still form part of farmington Hills today (/p>). Most recently Dearborn Heights has seen an increase in development around Lourdes Medical Center which will add another 30000+ people over next few decades if approved plans go through as expected). Farmington Hills is a census-designated place in Wayne County, Michigan. The population was 40,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Detroit metropolitan area. The village of Farmington Hills was organized on August 8, 1836 by John Dibble and others as a station on the Grand Trunk Railway. The first settler in what is now Farmington Hills was James Laughlin, who arrived in 1837. By 1840, the town had 100 residents. In 1847, farm land north of Farmington Hills became part of Township 11 East; however, due to Indian hostilities and lack of development opportunities, the township dissolved two years later without leaving any land behind for settlement. A post office called Farmington Heights opened in 1863, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1895. The name "Farmington Hills" was first used for a community located south of Detroit on what is now Roscommon Road (now I-75). On February 9, 1907,[4] an act entitled "An Act to amend the charter of Township 11 East," was passed by the Michigan Legislature and became effective as chapter 792 of the Consolidated Laws OfMichigan on that date; under this act[5], "Farmington Hills" became an official name for all east side subdivisions within Township 11East which were not already designated as separate townships or villages: these new developments included portions of Bloomfield Park (now Dearborn Heights), Arlington Heights (now Ann Arbor), Harrison Woods (now Woodbridge Township), Elliottville (now Dearborn Heights Village), Northwood Center (later Southwood Village), Westchester Center (later Northwood Village), and parts of Farmsdale Manor (later Southtown). This change from village to borough status applied only to those developments which were not already part of Townships 1 through 5; all other properties within Township 11East continued to be known as villages."[6] On October 15th 1912,[7] when School District No.-2 merged into School District No.-3,[8], most communities within School District No.-3 lost theirvillage status but kept their Post Offices open until they closed on December 15th 1942 when all offices were consolidated into one building at 351 Agosta Avenue.[9] At that time it was decided that no new Post Office should be built because people would just move away instead with technology so there wouldn't be anything left to keep up with! All remaining village post offices closed automatically on December 15th 1942 with no notice given or reason given other than closure order being put out there by management
