Farmington Hills, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 66,711 at the 2010 census, making it the fifteenth-largest city in Michigan and the largest within the Wayne County metropolitan area. It is located on the east side of Detroit, about 12 miles (19 km) south of downtown Detroit and about 16 miles (25 km) northeast of Midtown Detroit. The first known inhabitants of what is now Farmington Hills were two groups of Algonquian-speaking Native Americans who lived near Saginaw Bay in what is now southeastern Wayne County during pre-European times. Jesuit missionaries arrived in 1795 and began missionary work among these settlers, baptizing many of them into Catholicism. The first European to live permanently in Farmington Hills was Nicholas de Grasse, a French fur trader who established himself there in 1807 as part of his St. Catharine's Expedition; he built a small cabin on Cadillac Heights and named it Grasse House after his patron saint. The history behind Farmington Hills can be traced back more than two hundred years; it was founded by fur traders John Cavanaugh and Nicholas Lappin on land that would later become part of what is now western Wayne County. When bounding off land grants given to various families following Huron's victory at Fallen Timbers in 1795, government officials noted that much valuable land lay between Detroit and Toronto but no one had claimed it yet - this led to the idea for a post office be established at Westville so that settlers could exchange goods without having to go through Great Lakes ports like Marquette or Mackinac Island where goods were often confiscated by British authorities upon arrival. After several failed attempts due largely to scarcityof staff members available for such an important task, Cavanaugh finally got permission from then-Governor George Romney to establish a post office at Westville on November 3, 1824; it served primarily agricultural interests until1829 when mail became an essential part of commerce with Europeans living near Lake Huron who used Canandaigua Bay as their primary shipping point for goods exported back home across Lake Superior into Canada.
