In 1800, Nicholas de Tonti described Fort Niagara as consisting of two small villages named Sault Ste Marie and Pontiac which lay between Lake Huron and Ottawa (Tonti). By 1824, General Anthony Wayne's Army had founded the Post of Flint at present-day downtown Flint for trade with Native Americans who lived along the riverbanks across from where Fort Erie now stands ( Ford ). As early as 1823–24 some European traders built homes on land east side of river opposite Post Office – one account says they named their town after General Washington's niece: * Flushing Point being east side flowing downriver to Onondaga Landing* Some residents may have moved into new homes before November 8th 1830 when Post Office closed because Indians burned all buildings within five miles radius including their own houses(*Ford et al.). In 1824 Anthony Wayne discovered lead ore near present-day downtown Flint while his forces were fighting against Native Americans led by Chief Tecumseh (* deCourcy *) . Lead mining became common following this discovery so much so that people started calling it 'Leadville' (* Dumas ), even though today most lead recovered from Snyder Creek watershed comes from other parts of Michigan not mentioned above! After years of exploration many small mines were opened throughout Lower Peninsula but no large ones occurred until Phelps & Whitney set up their copper mine just southwest corner lot off current day Huron Road just northwesterly edge Of City Limits*. This began huge rush to area followed soon by others vying for properties around Phelps mine including Racine Co., Milwaukee Co.*(Lebanon)& Chicago~ tailing back property development* Original white home on lot next to Phelps Mine still standing today albeit without roof although conditionally habitable! Many immigrants who had nothing left to lose decided to move here rather then fight another war* For those reasons original name given place wasn't 'Flint' but rather quite differentsounding like Wimpole Place [*Austin] which later became part Of Ann Arbor also during this time period….. However initial settlers liked name so much they kept it even if place renamed several times over ensuing years

In the 1800s, Flint was a bustling city with rich cultural history. By the turn of the 21st century, however, Flint had become an economic disaster due to its lead and other contaminating materials being found in local water supplies. The city was placed under financialkellowness and social unrest followed. In 2013, a group of community-based organizations led by former Mayor Dayna Templeton lobbied for the city to be taken over by the government and made into a model community that would improve public health and education. This effort resulted in Flint's return to Bloomfield Township in 2014 after years of neglect by Michigan government officials
