Fraser, Michigan is a small city in the lower portion of the Peninsula Region of Michigan. Situated on the shore of Lake Superior, it had a population of just over 7,000 as of 2010. The city was founded in 1853 by Scots immigrants who arrived on the steamboat Fraser and named it after their ancestor, Sir John Fraser. It became part of Detroit when that city was incorporated in 1868. The town lost its status as an incorporated municipality following the enactment of Act 165 of 1978 which repealed all municipal incorporation laws except for those relating to water supply, fire fighting and sanitation. However, the City remains an important center for commerce and government services within Dearborn County. The history of Fraser starts with a group of Scots settlers who arrived on the steamboat Fraser in 1853. The name given to this community was Celtic for “the place where I am going” since they were going from Scotland to settle along what is now known as river Rouge (Red) River in what is today Fraser Township. By 1861, there were only about fifty residents living in this township with some land leased from farmers by local citizens. In 1878, following passage by Congress involving repeal of all municipal incorporation statutes except those related to water supply firefighting and sanitation operations within Dearborn County (an act that also eliminated many other cities), Detroit offered land concessions to several towns within Dearborn County consisting mostly rural lands near its downtown area including Fraser Township where it remained until1968 when it amalgamated into the larger city due to large population growth within its borders during that time period combined with rapidly changing demographics in both Detroit and surrounding counties outside Dearborn County resulting in unprecedented levels of demographic change across certain areas within metropolitan Detroit – well before even Middletown had annexed neighboring villages such as Novi or Sterling Heights among others during that time period! It wasn't until 1972 when elected officials decided that continuing service as an incorporated municipality would be more beneficial for taxpayers than continued economic decline which saw rapid job loss at General Motors plants located throughout downtownDetroit causing businesses seeking tax abatements/emigration become prevalent throughout much southeastern parts adjacent to downtown while significant suburban expansions took place especially eastward along M-1 freeway reaching beyond Oak Park & Ilion into Washtenaw Heights & Highland Park among others taking advantage OFD's acquiescence thereto; however soon thereafter recognition ensued from various private business owners/citizens associated with various civic organizations recognizing City's importance despite unofficial designation! Despite having no real governing body other than elected officials serving term limits set forth by state law upon election victory subsequent Mayor Ronald Dutton quickly established Community Advisory Committee composed largely retired mayors/mayors plus 3 members appointed by him chaired jointly by his wife Karen Whetstone Controller dept Land Bankruptcy Services Dept Treasuryruptcy Court Appellate Division!! ensuing process led ultimately to enactment via ordinance adopted thereby reestablishment effective January 1st 1980 having served 9 years prior then!! finally concluding nearly 50 years since original establishment making Fraser one OFD official community hosting over 240 businesses employing over 10k Residents !! quite an accomplishment considering few communities have lasted longer

In 1916, voters passed a charter amendment that granted voting rights to women in Fraser Township. This gave women a voice that had not been heard before within their community.
The Fraser River was named for the Scottish settler Alexander Fraser. The river was first surveyed in 1796 by Captain John Ball and General James Kobert, who named it the Dearborn River after their friend and ally, George Dearborn. In 1815, the Michigan Legislature renamed the river after its original namesake, Alexander Fraser of Scotland. The name stuck until 1906 when it reverted to its original name.
