Grand Haven, Michigan is a city in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The population was 19,865 at the 2010 census. In 1861 when Kalamazoo was taken over by Confederate General Ulysses S Grant during hisReconnaissance of Western Michigan Campaign, most of central Upper Peninsula went with him because no Union forces were availableto recapture it; however, some elements within Grand Haven refusedto secede from their state; these dissidents formed instead Second United Methodist Church which still stands today cornerstone inside current City Hall building (now used as storage). On July 4th 1862 while under way downriver from Detroit bound for Fort Dearborn – approximately 10 miles upstream from present day downtown – USS "Monongahela" ran into shoal off shore near modern day Gratiot Avenue Bridge; all 229 crew members lost their lives instantaneously when their boat capsized & sank with cargo including cannons & ammunition overboard! A grand memorial service was held at Muskegon Heights Cemetery subsequent year attended by President Abraham Lincoln
