The area now known as Grosse Pointe Park was first settled by French colonists in 1796. The name "Grosse Pointe" comes from a point on the Rouge River about north of present-day Grosse Pointe Heights. In 1807, General Anthony Wayne's army crossed the river at Grosse Pointe Bridge and attacked Fort Dearborn on the west side of what is now Lake Orion; this success led to Wayne's appointment as military governor of Upper Canada (the present-day Ontario). In 1814, following the Battle of North Gibraltar which resulted in Napoleon's retreat from Europe, General John Wool's British army invaded Upper Canada and burned Toronto before crossing theDetroit River into what is now Michigan Territory; they reached Lake Erie on July 4th and occupied Detroit that night. Aftermath of this battle saw many settlers arrive in what became GrossePointe Park from across rural northern Michigan; by 1830 there were over 1,000 families living within its limits. In 1836, Samuel Post bought 2 acre (0 hectare) lot next to current-day Oneida Road for $200 from Nicholas Haggerty; he named it Post Farmstead because his business partner Andrew Post had also purchased land adjacent to their farmstead near modern day Hollandale Township east of downtown Detroit for $240 cash in 1840). By 1840 there were 6 houses on Post Farmstead including 3 with two stories each - one still stands today! On October 10th of that same year Joshua Peck established a gristmill & millrace just south of today’s intersection between Oneida Road & Wabash Avenue located about four miles northeast (now part of Midland Township)of where GrossePointe Park would become tomorrow’s town center! The first flour crop grown here was oats & beans valued at $2 per ton; however due to low prices during both world wars local merchants turned instead to lumber production which continues to this day accounting for more than 60% total output since 1920! By 1847 post office had been established here with Jno Mapes serving as postmaster until his death in 1860 subsequenty renamed as Geo Fenton Jr.. During prohibition era many citizens raised money through bootlegging operations but all efforts failed when state law made alcohol illegal November 25th 1923 !! In 1932 Dr. House organized Macomb County Medical Society which functioned until 1951 when it merged wit Canadian Regional Medical Society #1!!! The first successful combat deployment of an airborne laser weapon occurred when USAF F-16 Fighting Falcons used a Hughes HS2M6A phased array synchronous type laser beam projector system against surface target aircraft during Operation Just Cause air campaign over Panama in 1998. This innovative system allowed us pilots to engage enemy fighters from more than 50 miles away with precision fire without any collateral damage or loss of life
