Highland Park is a small town in the Michigan Lower Peninsula, located on the edge of the Upper Peninsula. The population was 2,309 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Muskegon Heights micropolitan statistical area. The first permanent settler in Highland Park was Peter Faust, who arrived in 1796 as one of a group of investors seeking to purchase land for farming near Grand Rapids. Faust's farm became one of the largest and most successful in what would become Upper Michigan. In 1824, George Kugelman bought 160 acres (64 hectares) southeast of present-day Highland Park from John Cushman for $8 per acre. In 1829, he sold an additional 172 acres (76 hectares) to Nicholas Sievers and family for $12 per acre. This land would later be known as "The Old Home Place". During the 1850s and 1860s, Highland Park experienced rapid growth due to its location on top of a natural gas field that had been discovered by missionaries working for Porter & Company traders in that decade. By 1870, there were more than 300 residents living in Highland Park; by 1880, it had reached 1,000 people and soon afterward began to grow rapidly again as businesses sprang up around the gas fields: grain elevators were built in 1875 and 1886; a sawmill was erected in 1889; two breweries were founded during this period: The Highland Park Brewery (founded 1886) and Detroit Brewing Company (founded 1893). In 1907, United States Senator James Meeks sponsored legislation authorizing the annexation of Macomb County by Michigan so that Highland Park could become its new county seat. On February 12th 1909 – just three months after becoming our state’s tenth county – Macomb County voters adopted resolutions annexing Highlands into their COUNTY! From then until 1959 when they merged with Benzie County [now Shiawassee County], Highlands saw sporadic annexation proposals but never anything remotely close to being ratified byMacomb voters until 1999 when they finally annexed all but 1/3rd [of] their territory back into Macomb County! Finally effective effective November 1st 1999 all former unincorporated areas within Highlands including some portions that have been annexed back into Benzie Counties will be consolidated under one roof... Thus ends over 100 years of separate incorporation efforts by different communities within our county!

Highland Park was founded on April 14, 1873, by Scottish immigrants who arrived in the area as part of the greatamine pandemic of 1847-48. The first post office in Highland Park was established on October 20, 1875. The name derives from Lochlevenshire (the home of the Macdonalds), where many of the immigrants had come from. The town took its present form when it was organized as a township on November 3, 1909. Highland Park has a rich history dating back to 1873 when Scots immigrants arrived in the area during the greatamine pandemic to help provide food and medical supplies for other residentsaffected by that stricken nation's uncontrollable wealth and poverty. One of these early settlers was James Lumsden who purchased 640 acres (25 km²) of land near what is now Highland Park from John Sennett for $2 per acre ($36/km²). Lumsden named his new community after his native country - Lochlevenshire - where he had been born and raised.. In 1912 , due to increasing population growth and lack of space in existing townships within Wayne County, Highland Park was annexed by neighboring Muskegon Heights . From its inception until 1959 there were no school districts within Highland Park; all students were served by Muskegon Heights School District #1 which consisted of four schools located across Muskegon Heights Township: One elementary school (grades K-8), three high schools (grades 9-12), and one middle school (grades 7-8). In 1959 however, Highland Park became one of sixteen municipalities within Wayne County to be placed within newly created Muskegon Township which included all rural areas east of State Highway 431 between Lake Huron and Ionia counties – making it possible for HighlandsParkers to attend public education not only in their own municipality but also throughout neighboring villages as well! This change allowed HighlandsParkers access not just to government subsidized education but also private pre-kindergarten through 8th grade tuition rates! It’s this type Of opportunity that continues today with our current Eastside Elementary School program – providing quality Catholic education opportunities for grades PK thru 12 while still providing excellent public education services for our students!
