Holland, Michigan is a small town in the western portion of Macomb County, Michigan. The population was 1,902 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Flint-Livonia Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by German immigrants in 1836 as "Harding", named for General Wilhelm Harding who had come to America that year as a delegate from Prussia. The name changed to Holland in 1851 and then again to Holland Township in 1892. The township was created from portions of Clinton Township on November 3, 1898. The first settler in Holland Township was Georges Griggs, who arrived there in 1836 and built a cabin on the southern edge of what is now Holland Village. In 1840, John Fein bought land adjacent to Griggs' cabin and began developing it into a small community called Feinburg which he named after his father-in-law Johann Heckelberg (1798–1860). He died young while farming the land and no one knows for sure when or how Feinburg came to be called Holland. In 1851, Hermann Klinkhammer purchased some land east of Feinburg and started development called Klinkhamertown which he renamed after himself later that year. Klinghammer died childless before he could complete building his home there so his home also remains unoccupied today as does part of his farmstead which still stands today next to much older homes dating back to 1800s which are now being used as apartments or office buildings. The first post office in Holland Township was established on July 15, 1852 with Jens Wessels serving as its first supervisor. On October 20 of that same year another post office opened at nearby Clinton with Jacobus van der Zee serving as its first supervisor until 1861 when he became an assistant justice on the probate court bench at Lansing where he remained until his death on January 12th 1863 due to natural causes at age 54 years old; note: van der Zee's retirement from service coincided with Lansing's incorporation into Macomb County - making him one of the earliest members (if not actually owner)of that county! On February 14th 1870 Henry Totten opened up what is now known as Dutch Brothers grocery store/apartment complex located across from present day Klinkhamertown Buffet restaurant across from I-94 near exit 291A off I-94 near mile marker 84.(note: this spot currently contains an apartment complex known locally simply as "Dutch Bros.") This business would grow quite large over time becoming one of Macomb County's most successful businesses during late 19th centuryMichigan history! In 1906 Hemanus de Vries took over ownership/operation of Dutch Bros./Klinkhamertown Buffet restaurant following Henry Totten's death however de Vries would only stay open for about 5 years prior dying suddenly infancy premature aged only 22 years old; note: note: although De Vries operated Dutch Bros./Klinkhamertown Buffet restaurant through 1906 most likely due largely to family connections rather than anything truly unique about his business - it should be noted that even though de Vries operated Dutch Bros./Klinkhamertown Buffet restaurant thru 1906 many likely did not receive paid wages for their work during this period(Note: Accordingto multiple sources including local historian Don Schmitt personal interviews have revealed THIS fact among other things suggesting that perhaps something more nefarious occurred behind closed doors at Dutch Bros./Klinkhamerstown Buffet restaurant during this time period which has yetTo Be Fully Investigated)) . Holland, Michigan was once a thriving agricultural community with many businesses and homes. However, the area is now largely rural and lacks much modern amenities. The Holland Historic District contains many of the town's most famous landmarks, such as the Holland Mill and Old Dutch School. The district also includes a number of smaller buildings and sites that are significant in local history. The first settler in what is now Holland was Cornelius Vanderpool, who arrived in 1824. He built a cabin on the banks of the Ottawa River. In 1829, he married Maria Haggerty and together they started an agricultural business called Haggerty & Vanderpool. The couple operated their farm until 1853 when they sold it to John Auldslett. Auldslett turned it into a flour mill which continued to operate until 1903. The Holland Mill was built in 1858 by Solomon Kappeler as part of his efforts to improve transportation for his farmworkers. It became one of the largest mills in Michigan at its time and produced flour, cottonseed oil, butter, cheese, eggs and other goods for local markets; it also served as a school from 1860 until 1959. The Old Dutch School was founded in 1792 by Nicholas-Jacques Rousseau as an academy for children living near Grand Rapids (then known as Stoney Point). It remained open until 1939 when it closed due to budgetary cuts made by the state government during World War II. Today only fragments of its walls remain from its past glory days; however, its story provides inspiration for many of today's small towns across America that struggle with budget reductions while trying to maintain important historical landmarks like schools or churches
Holland is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan, located on the Grand River between Detroit and Flint. The population was 25,025 at the 2010 census. The first recorded mention of Holland was in 1280 when it was called "Hollen". In 1795, a group of English colonists living in what is now Lansing founded a town called Clinton Township, which they named after LordClinton, who had been their leader during the American Revolution. The township was incorporated as a village in 1824 and became a city in 1903. In 1827, John Fenton bought land along the river from the Potawatomi people for $1 per acre and established Hixson Landing on the site of present-day Holland. By 1830, he had developed large tracts of land to support his growing industry; this included founding what is now Hixson Township and developing several other villages around him before his death in 1840. Held by his heirs until 1861 when it passed through various hands until it came into private ownership again, it resumed its name as Holland on July 1st 1901 following an act by then-Mayor Augustus Pugh (1901–1902) to commemorate Dutch immigrants who had made significant contributions to life in downtown Lansing over that year alone including Andries van der Sloot (1886–1967), president of Macomb County Land Company; Harry Averhoff (1892–1965), manager of General Motors' Allegany car plant; Cornelius Jansen (1860–1928), chairman and managing partner of Jansen & Sons grocery store chain; Leo Muhlenberg (1885–1952), co-founder and general manager of Muhlenberg Brewing Co.—the very first brewery built in America—and others associated with that period such as Lillian Hellman (1915–2002). After being purchased by its current owner First National Bank for $262 million on October 15th 2002, restoration work began immediately on seven historic buildings within walking distance: three bridges across the Grand River—the original anchors for both spans being replaced with new steel trusses—the State Capitol building erected between 1896 and 1898 using Federal style brick piers incorporating Romanesque Revival features; City Hall dating from 1902 when it replaced an earlier frame structure; two churches: onebuilt by Dutch Reformed missionaries early 1800s known as St Andrew's Episcopal Church Joliet but later renamed Holy Trinity Catholic Church nearby after conversion to Roman Catholicism under pressure from local Protestants; Revivals Presbyterian Church completed 1886 followed by Mother Redemptorist Convent completed 1912 also featuring Gothic features typical of those days complete with spire atop tower originally designed by Dutch architect Johannes de Valk who supervised construction while also working on White House for Ulysses S Grant 1908-14 also contains bones attributed to Chief Justice Roger Taney
