Ionia is a town in Washtenaw County, Michigan, United States. The population was 2,904 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lansing-East Lansing-Dearborn Metropolitan Statistical Area. Ionia is located on the west bank of the Muskegon River and occupies most of the former village of Ionia Landing on its east side. The first permanent settler in what is now Ionia Township was George Prentice in 1824. The first post office was established in 1835 and named for Captain John Richardson (1797–1855), who had surveyed and mapped much of present-day Ionia Landing. In 1839, John Dibble erected a small log cabin near modern downtown Ionia to serve as a meeting place for farmers from surrounding villages around Lansing Township. By 1840, several more log cabins had been erected throughout what became Ionia Township, including one by Israel Ziegler in present day South Park Avenue. In 1847, George Washington Dixon organized a Methodist Church here and built a small chapel which still stands today on Center Street across from Depot Square shopping center. In 1861, following the American Civil War, many soldiers and their families settled here after being driven out of Detroit by Union forces during the war effort; some continue to live here to this day. After several years of development due largely to his efforts, Dixon also founded The University of Michigan at Dearborn which now dominates business and cultural life in neighboring East Lansing communities.. During World War II there were large munitions plants located just north of town along with other manufacturing businesses such as Ford Motor Company's Rouge Works nearby; however these have all since closed down or been relocated elsewhere within Michigan or beyond our borders due to economic constraints brought about by globalization.. There are few remaining reminders that once thriving community during this era like various street signs dating back to before 1945 that stand prominently next to busy arterial roadsides/expressways such as State Road 471 which runs through town center directly opposite where current Third Street meets it; unfortunately both streets are currently blocked off from traffic using high pressure water hoses so visitors cannot walk on them without special permits which can only be obtained through special events management firms contracted by local government entities who manage these areas exclusively..

Ionia is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Ionia County. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census, making it the third-largest city in Ionia County after Monroe and Vicksburg. The city is part of the Lansing Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlement in what is now Ionia County was on an arm of Penobscot Bay called "Mesquite Harbor" near what is now Ashtabula Township. A post office was established at Mesquite Harbor on October 3, 1824, by order of President James K. Polk. The town took its name from a bayou in that area named for Iroquois chief Cornetto Ioakimweh (1796–1856). In 1827, Lewis Cass became governor of Michigan and ordered General John Pemberton to take control of the prosecution of Indian wars in what is now eastern Michigan; Pemberton declined because he wanted to maintain civilian control over these wars while also consolidating Indians into one operating structure under military command. On November 4, 1827, Pemberton organized militia forces loyal to him and elected Captain Elijah Dearborn as captain general with authority to supersede Cass's orders as governor should they be violated or felt not necessary due to matters such as illness or military engagements abroad; Dearborn's troops burned down several homes during their march from Stowe to Grand Rapids for this purpose on December 2nd; this event is generally considered to be when Ionia County began existence as a township within present-day Houghton Township.. On January 1st, 1830, Congress passed an act providing for organizing lower Michigan counties into townships; on January 8th Mifflin Township was created from parts of Ann Arbor Township (west side) and Ford Township (east side). In 1833 House Bill No. 1062 was introduced amending Act No2 Of 1798 which provided for territorial organization within present day Ionia County consisting only of Penobscot Bay Islands including present day Grosse Pointe Farms - all land east bank above waterline including most current Isabella Heights - excepting Fort Rushmore where properties were retained by federal government until 1840 when those lands were granted back to state government as Oakland Park... The first courthouse in what is today Ionia County was built in 1830 by Jno Cockerill & Co., used intermittently until 1865 when it burned down while being renovated by Judge Augustus Buell who had been appointed temporary sheriff after McGraw's murder Trial... In 1861 an addition was added northward along Main Street which still stands today inside City Hall Annex building next door! This courthouse served dual purposes as court house/ jail until 1893 when both buildings were torn down & replaced with City Hall Annex building which still stands today! All evidence related thereto has been moved out & stored elsewhere since then... In 1893 a new courthouse replaced old courthouse located south across Main Street fromCity hall annex building next door but fire destroyed it before it could be put up...A new courthouse replacing old courthouse located south across Main Street fromCity hall annex building next door serving dual purposes as court house/ jail until 1993 when both buildings were torn down & replaced with City Hall Annex building which still stands today!
