They built a log cabin on what is now Main Street. In 1830, they purchased land that became Arenac County from David Rice. When Jackson was elected president in 1828, he visitedArenac County and ordered all Male Indians to leave their homes or face government action. The men took over buildings in downtown Arenac for their own homes until each location had about 20 residents living there by 1830. In 1834, James Fenton founded the village of Wyoming on his farm north of present-day downtown Jackson . He brought with him some lumber from Norway and built a sawmill on what is now Elmwood Avenue . By 1840, Wyoming had a store and two blacksmiths as well as several houses; it also had a schoolhouse and jail. By 1845, most of the businesses had closed down due to lack of customers or competition from larger towns along Muskegon River Valley . A post office called Wyoming was established at this time but no mail ever traveled there because no roads existed then nor are they needed now to get to other villages located nearby like Hollandale or Menominee Falls . A new post office called Arenac was established south of present-day downtownJackson on what is now Maple Street between 1850 and 1870 primarily due to an influx of settlers coming throughthe area after Black Hawk War (1856 - 58) when large tracts were acquired by Ulysses S Grant during that conflict In 1881, when Arenac County merged with Ottawa County , most residents chose to keep their original names while others changed them such as Fentonstown (now Waterford), Sheridan (now Hillsboro), Sayre (now Traverse City), etcetera The first bus service started up within town limits within 1 year after opening operation on July 15th 1886 which ran between Grand Rapids & Detroit
