In 1827, Kalamazoo became a village under territorial jurisdiction when it was organized as an unincorporated community within Ottawa Township. As Ottawa Township grew larger, it lost its status as an unincorporated community; however, it remained its own municipal government until 1959 when it merged into Washtenaw County as one entity. In 1881, divine intervention led John Calvin Coolidge to purchase 4,000 acres (1 km2) along with 2 others for $5 from Ottawa County commissioners James Jarratt and Isaac Buttrey; this became Coolidge Park today's downtown area. In 1896, Wm Hance began construction of what would become Water Street Bridge across Renfrew River; this crossing helped spur development around present day First Ward including much of Downtown Kalamazoo today. On July 3rd 1906 Kalamazoo made history when prohibition was repealed in America through an act passed by Congress known as The Gilded Age Act (). As part of this effort many industries moved out west into new towns such as Flint or LansingMichigan while other companies relocated back to town because they could no longer compete with prohibition prices range from $3 per gallon gasoline up to $100 per barrel oil! During World War II many businesses closed due to wartime shortages but reopened once war ended. After the war most employers either retired or left town altogether leaving few jobs open so industry slowly declined again until recent years when there has been renewed growth thanks largely to WMU students studying engineering and technology fields! Development also includes many high rise condos/apartments being built near downtown giving current residents plenty of space within walking distance without having to leave their neighborhoods!
Kalamazoo was first settled by the Potawatomi tribe in 1796. The town's namesake, Kalamazoo Creek, was named for the Spanish word "calzada" meaning 'hill top'. The first mills in the town were built along what is now Michigan Avenue.
