During Reconstruction following Reconstructionism's heyday during America's post-Civil War period (1865-1913), Kalamazoo experienced rapid growth with many new businesses opening up including a library and grocery store soon becoming one of Michigan's most powerful economic engines. However, during World War II much of what had been built along State Street came under attack by American forces retreating from Europe; this included damage to several blocks of buildings along State Street including an important railroad junction where state Route 9 crossed over from Ontario into Michigan at that time; these attacks led to increased business losses for local merchants until 1945 when state Route 9 improved conditions along that stretch making it possible for shopping malls to sprout up like wildflowers throughout much of Michigan without experiencing such disruptions
