Kentwood is a small town in the Kalamazoo-Portage County, Michigan area. The population was 1,848 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Muskegon Heights–Harrison Township community. The first residents of Kentwood were probably French Catholics who arrived in 1814 from Illinois. They started a small Catholic church and school in what is now the eastern edge of town. In 1847, lawyer John Cranch bought land near present-day Kentwood and built a large frame house on it. He became known as the "Father of Kentwood." One of Cranch's sons, James Fenton Cranch, took over his father's business and continued to grow it until 1914 when he sold it to George Wernick for $10,000. Wernick was an early settler in this area and also founded Hallettville (now part of Hudson) about two miles away from present-dayKentwood. By 1860, there were around 100 people living in Kentwood. By 1870, there were 300 people living here with 50% being white males and 50% black females. In 1880, the population had increased to 400 with 100% being white males and 100% black females; but by 1910 only 50% were white males and 50% were black females. Some residents may have left due to economic reasons such as World War I which caused decreased demand for goods produced by local farmers or because racial discrimination within local communities led to social changes that discouraged African Americans from moving back into their original places of residence after integration occurred statewide during the 1920s (Fenton). However, most historians believe that many people simply left because they could not support themselves while living separately from other white citizens despite efforts made by various organizations such as the NAACP to integrate all public schools throughout Michigan statewide during this time period; however these efforts did not succeed in total compliance with federal law enforceable through state government via education codes passed by legislatures at that time (Kohlman). This lack of integration then likely served as pretexts for whites to move out instead based on their own individual interests rather than concerns about possible negative consequences if integrated policies failed or/and troublesome locals managed to stay hidden behind closed doors (Chambers). Consequently few African American descendants remain today directly associated with this historically segregated community although numerous descendants still live there through intermarriage or adoption
