In 1892, Lansing was the site of the first rifle match in America. The event was organized by the National Rifle Association and featured competitors from across the country. Theeventbecamethestandardofthe sportinAmericaandhasbeenheld yearly ever since. In 1911, Lansing hosted its third annual event which drew 500 participants. In 1925, a new ballistic institute was built in Lansing and became known as State Arsenal #3. This facility helped to develop modern rifle ammunition while providing training for police officers and other law enforcement personnel. In 1957, the Michigan Legislature passed a bill authorizing the state government to purchase Ammunition Research Development Laboratories (ARDL) for use in developing new types of ammunition. ARDL would eventually become known as Western Ammunition Corporation. 2 years later, WAC hired research chemist Dr. Julius Eckert to work on developing an improved ballistics for artillery rounds called “Eckert” rounds. These rounds were designed to improve accuracy and efficiency when fired from cannons and other artillery platforms. WACwouldcontinuedevelopingammunitionuntil1962whenthey merged with Winchester Ammunition Company to form Winchester-Winchester Ammunition Corporation.. After this merger, WACbecamethelargestmanufactureroffirearmammunitionintheworldwitha portfoliothatrevolvedprimarily around shot shells, cartridge cases, primer detonators and Reloading Kits
