The modern-day town of Madison Heights was organized on November 3, 1892 by hikers and settlers from nearby Harrison Township. The original name for the community was "Saddleback" because of the high Saddleback Mountains to the east and west. The first house in Madison Heights was built on what is now Second Street by George Witherspoon and his wife Sophia. Mr. Witherspoon's father came over with General Wayne during the American Revolution and cattle rustling began in this area soon after that event. In 1892, a post office called "Harrison" was established at what is now Third Avenue and East Main Street; it served as the village's only mail stop until 1915 when it became portion of Lansing with its own post office system. In 1895, Harry Aiken established a sawmill on Maple Creek near present day Fourth Street and Grosse Pointe Road; it remains one of the oldest industrial establishments in Madison Heights today. Aiken also founded what would become known as Aiken’s grocery store in 1903 which continues to be open today as an independently owned business located across from Park Place mall off I-696 northbound Exit 24A (southbound Exit 23A). In 1907, John Denton opened Denton’s meats market just south of Third Avenue on present day Midtown Drive; it remains one of downtown Madison Heights’ most popular attractions today dating back to its inception more than 100 years ago! In 1916, Jens Christensen opened Jens' Auto Parts & Body Shop across from Park Place mall off I-696 northboundExit 24A (southboundExit 23A). This dealership would later becomeGoodyear Tire & Rubber Company which continued operations until 1997 when it closed down due to financial problems within weeks! In 1927, Elijah Hines bought land adjacent to Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company along present day Southfield Drive; he developed this land into an extensive agricultural district that still exists today known as Hines Township! In 1928 or 1929 there may have been some construction activity taking place just east of Centerpoint Shopping Center off I-696 northbound exit 238B (southbound exit 237B). Unknown at this time but subsequent research has revealed that this activity may have been related to development plans for what would become Little Rock Boulevard which eventually became part of Interstate 495! In 1933 or 1934 there may have been some construction activity taking place just west of Centerpoint Shopping Center off I-696 northbound exit 238B (southbound exit 237B). By 1937 or 1938 all traces of these construction projects had either disappeared or were unrecoverable due to weather conditions!!
The first permanent settler in the area was Captain James K. Polk, who arrived in 1837. The town of Madison Heights was platted in 1848, and the population grew quickly from a few hundred to around two thousand by 1860. By 1870,Madison Heights had become a thriving community with a large number of businesses and homes. In 1875, it became the county seat for Wayne County, Michigan. During the late 19th century and early 20th century, Madison Heights experienced rapid growth and development as a result of its location on the major east-west road corridor and its easy access to transportation networks. It became an important center for commerce and industry, with many businesses located along Woodward Avenue. The population reached over ten thousand by 1920. In 1933, it was annexed by Detroit after being designated as part of that city's inner ring suburb area pursuant to Act No. 9 of that year.
