The city was founded on October 15, 1837 by Nicholas Bagley and his wife Catharine Beams with the intention of creating a new town to protect their land from other developers who were planning to build near them. The name "Madison Heights" was chosen because it sounded like a name mentioned in an old tract of land that they owned called "The Mount." Through its incorporation as a city on December 6, 1868, Madison Heights became one of the first villages in Oakland County. It retains this status today despite having had only 8 residents when incorporation occurred and having no budget for infrastructure or local services before becoming an official municipality. In 1976, Madison Heights annexed portions of Clinton Township to form a larger city with more resources for government and services than what its original population could provide on its own. However, due to heavy economic decline during the late 1970s and early 1980s within both cities combined (due largely to job loss caused by automation), Clinton Township reverted back to being an unincorporated community after annexation; however, it still remains as its own separate township within Oakland County under terms set forth by treaty between both cities. Accordingly, while much has changed since 1837 when Madison Heights was established as just a small village—including rapid growth during past two decades within both housing prices and employment opportunities since emigration from Canada began increasing—much remains unchanged about this historic community located just east of downtown Detroit which has been home to some 5 million people over four centuries including many prominent families such as those aforementioned Beams/Bagley/Norman family dynasty (whose descendants still live here), as well as numerous other notable individuals associated with early American life (e.g., General George Washington Carver). Madison Heights, Michigan was a small town in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, United States. It was located on the east bank of the Detroit River between what is now Monroe and Park Heights Streets. The population was 1,500 at the time of its incorporation in 1851. The first settler in Madison Heights was Peter Whitney, who came to the area in 1846 from Houghton County, Ohio. Whitney purchased 640 acres (246 hectares) of land on which he built a home and farmstead known as Whitney's Grove. He also developed a millinery business and raised chickens and cows on his property. In 1851, Madison Heights became an incorporated community when itsurrounding villages were organized into townships. At that time, it consisted of only a few scattered homes and farms across several blocks on Monroe Street between Cass Avenue and Highland Boulevard.
